I would do it. I would do it to make sure my children are free of genetic disease. I would do it to make sure that my children are capable of surviving outside the womb. But most importantly, I would do it to make sure my children stayed competitive in the capitalist hell- scape that would allow me to modify my unborn children to my own specifications.

The atomic bomb was originally intended to end the largest war in human history. In addition, scientists knew that the technology used in the bomb could also be used for peaceful purposes. However, the use of the bomb has been hijacked by power- hungry politicians and generals to further their own ends.

China, despite officially being a "communist" nation, is anything but. You are confusing authoritarian governments with communist states.

First of all, you're looking for "tried". Second, I see that you have never heard of a country named Sweden, which is socialist by virtually every definition of the word, and yet is one of the world's most competitive economies. Sweden also has a higher average lifespan, lower infant mortality, and spends less of its GDP on healthcare than the US. We are spending more and getting less. It is insane that people are still arguing against universal healthcare.

I have to agree that the terminology used is very misleading. It would have made more sense to say that synthetic life is life that was created artificially by man and serves little to no natural relation (i.e. is not descended from via reproduction) with existing life.

2 points

To ask if synthetic life is moral or immoral is unnecessarily blunt. It is like saying nuclear fission is moral or immoral. Sure, you could use synthetic life to wipe out humanity. But you could also use it as a tool to solve the energy crisis. Most who question the morality of synthetic life are concerned less with the possible ill- effects and more with the violation of biblical or ancient views on the "sanctity" of life.

Because at the end of the day, everyone else is a person, just like you. Well, maybe not just like, but very similar to. Everyone else has feelings and emotions, hopes and dreams. Unfortunately, not everyone is privileged enough to be born rich. Not everyone is lucky enough to be born with the skills that allow them to move up in the world. Who are you to say who gets to live and who is to die? And this "someone else" that you speak of- how inconvenienced would they be to give a small amount of their daily earnings to the well being of everyone else? A national insurance system would spread the risk of a few sick people across the population of the entire United States.

This is true, but at the same time, it's hard to say that small business owners should be forced to change companies (at their own expense) because hundreds of ill informed but well meaning boycotters stopped buying their fuel. BP's oil is blended with that of other large corporations (i.e. Mobil) and then sold to stations. A Mobil gas station could be selling BP gas, and a BP station could be selling gas that contains almost nothing from BP. It is much more rational to sue the pants off of BP than to boycott them.
