However, without the invention of light bulbs by Thomas Edison, people could still 'survive' the night with the help of candle lights. Candles can be lighted easily and in the past, the nights are cold and windy, heat from the candles can be used to keep a person warm and has many uses. I do not agree that ''People now can stay up at night to work on their things anywhere they want with ease without worrying that they do not have light to help them see." What if the bulb fuses suddenly? People would still panic. People would have no choice but to leave their work undone or to the extend of having to light a candle just so they can finish their work. Did you know that "Fluorescent bulbs of any kind contains mercury. Mercury builds up in the environment, especially in lakes and rivers. It is a nerve poison that can do bad things to fish and to the creatures that eat them, from loons to people mainly central nervous system damage." Although this only shows that some light bulbs are harmful, it does not mean that the others are not. With the improvement of technology, people or even animals can still get hurt from technology and hence, i can conclude that technology is more of a bane than a boon.
To begin with, technology is improving the lives of humans. Before there was technology, people passed on early; at the age of forty-five to fifty-five and illnesses were left without cure, before the 21st century. Based on a research, "...combined male-female life expectancy at birth is unlikely to exceed 90 years in the 21st century without scientific advances". However, with the progress of technology, life expectancy of humans steadily increased to the age of eighty to ninety or even more. Cures for diseases and illness in the past are now found and are still improving. In addition, even with incurable diseases, life expectancy still remains high due to the existence of technology. "In developing countries where bacterial diseases are still prevalent, the average life span is often constrained to about 45-55 years. On the other hand, in more developed countries where chronic diseases have taken over as the main causes of death, the average life expectancy usually reaches at least seventy years. " With this, I can conclude that technology is more of a boon than a bane to the society.
