"I agree, Bush spent like a Dem..."

So condemn him already. ;)

The problem with you conservatives is that you can't stop grabbing your ankles. You let everyone push you around - war industrialists, crazed religious freaks, lying politicians, greedy rich people, white supremacists. Man up, nancy boys.

You need to boot all the Bushes, Roves, Palins and Steeles out of your political party and stand up for something real. Democrats stand for human rights, the value of human life over money, the rights of the living over those of the unborn. What do Republicans stand for? Greed, selfishness, racism, fearmongering, and never-ending wars overseas. Not much to admire there.

Go get a moral compass already. And not the cheap flag-waving, bible-thumping kind. Get some values the rest of us can respect. Then you can lecture us on what we should and should not do.

War equals murder. Rich equals greedy. White equals favored. If you've got some different solutions, we'd love to hear them.

It's so true. We liberals are all about replacing Mister Rogers with Mullah Omar.

Why oh why are all the least informed opinions on here the most religious ones? Is Jesus making us dumb?

Wait, don't answer that. I don't want to know.

I'm your Huckleberry.

Conservatism is entrenched in the past. It gets its "values" from religion - that festival of me-tooism and unsubstantiated belief - and from things people instinctively fear, which are said to be God-given fears: gays, government, Jews, whatever.

Liberalism points to the future. It paints a "pie in the sky" picture where people have outgrown their childish hatreds and learned to respect and get along with one another.

Neither system works, because both ignore reality. Conservatives like to pretend that the working poor and mixed motives don't exist; liberals like to pretend that conservatives don't exist - or at least won't, for long.

But the political party for conservatives, the Republican Party, truly has morphed into the party of "no." "Yes" is better than "no", because "yes" at least implies growth. The only growth that conservatives support is in the contents of a rich white man's wallet. Left unchecked, the conservative impulse will lead inevitably to food riots and race war.

Therefore, conservatives are doing more to destroy America.

I think we should take off and nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

I'd argue that most giving is inherently selfish, or at least due to mixed motives. Tax breaks, recognition by one's religious peers, or gaining the approval of other rich folks (e.g., charity events) are just three of the reasons that come to mind.

In my experience people do give generously and from the heart, but only when the gifts are small and affordable to them. For a truly rich person that might even be $100,000 or more. But as a percentage of their total wealth, it must be insignificant.

You can't build a just society from gifts such as these. It'll takes more than table scraps to feed the other 40% of America.

I'll happily sell you my ex-wife, when you get the dough. She's in perfect condition and was only used 1,476 times.

Well said! Money can't buy you happiness, but poverty can't buy you anything.

Immigrants are the Fourth Beast? Good God, you're advocating race war.

I don't like the "porous border" concept either, but you mustn't blame the immigrants. Blame the greedy b--tards who readily and knowingly employ them, attracting them here in the first place. That scum is too cheap to pay higher wages for local labor, so you and I must compete with every campesino in South America and every college grad in India.

Yet Americans, who serve Mammon, make endless excuses for our business executives. I guess everyone must be either a hero or a villain, and you cannot call your boss a villain and hope to live, so this gives every businessman a clean bill of health. The simple-mindedness of my countrymen makes me weep.

Don't be racist. Be a reverse classist, and get it right.

True, but money can buy you meds which increase your happiness. That's a scientific fact.

One must not simply repeat what others have told him. Dig deeper, if you want the truth!

1 point

This is something of a false comparison, but I'll give it a whirl anyway.

If you've ever suffered from depression, which I have, then you know sadness comes and goes according to its own schedule - it's a part-time affliction, and one you can take steps to control.

Poverty, on the other hand, attacks night and day with no letup. And it tends to make all your sadnesses increase. And there's no way to remedy it quickly or easily - you must take a crap job, work your fingers to the bone, and hope for a bit of luck. Or take terrible risks, breaking the law.

So despite what we might want to believe here, the edge is with wealth. With money, you at least have better options.
