Even if we are now addicted to fossil fuels, we will have to start a conversion to non-fossil fuel sooner or later. As you know, the amount of fossil fuel, which emerged in millions of years, is limited and we already consumed huge amounts of it. There is no reason to wait until fossil fuels become a scarce and expensive resource, before we start that energy conversion project.
As long as major polluters like the US, China and India do not sign a cap and trade treaty like Kyoto, there is no incentive for the industry to reduce carbon emissions. I'm especially worried about the bailout of the US automobile industry. This is a one in a million chance for the government to demand the production of fuel efficient cars. There should be no bailout for companies producing gas-guzzlers.
I don't think, it's that easy. There's just not enough space for everybody to start farming. Think about all the people living in cities. Most of them will loose their jobs as will those working for McDonals, Wal-mart and Starbucks. There's no way for all of them to buy land and become self-sufficient.
America hijacked and shipped millions of slaves to the new world. Don't you think, that the robbing of young and strong men and women for generations somehow contributed to the poor condition that continent is in today? Some call it the black Holocaust, which isn't too bad a name for that atrocity.
