The monster does not earn sympathy because on page 101 he exclaims out "this was then the reward of my benevolence! I had saved a human being from destruction, and as a recompense I now writhed under the miserable pain of a wound which shattered the flesh and bone". By the monster saying this, it shows how outraged he is for not receiving accolade, which gives the monster some sympathy. But then the monster then said "The few feelings of kindness and gentleness , which I had entertained but a few moments before, gave place to hellish rage and gnashing of teeth. Inflamed by pain, I vowed eternal hatred and vengeance to all mankind", which shows that the monster is filled with agony and hatred. To deserve sympathy, one must display the ability to return sympathy; the monster is not doing so.

The monster does deserve some sympathy from humanity for when he is exclaiming "this was then the reward of my benevolence! I had saved a human being from destruction, and as a recompense I now writhed under the miserable pain of a wound which shattered the flesh and bone" (page 101), he is bewildered on how he can not receive accolade for a good deed when he meant well. The monster just gets judged on his appearances and everyone assumes that he is up to no good and he will do wrong.

I believe that the antagonist of the novel is Victor Frankenstein because he blames the monster for ruining his life and all the hate and depression he experiences. But actually he himself is the one that ruins his life for he created the monster and doesn't show any respect towards it. Page 68, "Devil", I exclaimed, "do you dare approach me?"

I believe that the monster is the protagonist because he is more of a human being than any of the characters. He feels more and has more emotions. His emotions are shown when he collects wood for the poverty filled people at the cottage. Also he realizes that he is ugly, so he doesn’t want to be like the other people when they judge about what they see; he has an open mind and doesn’t judge appearances. Also the monster realizes when he sees his reflection that he suffers since birth, like he is cursed. Unlike the rest of the people, they create their own downfall by making mistakes. Therefore the monster shows that he is a bigger person and doesn’t follow what society does. Page 78 “I found that in doing this I inflicted pain on the cottagers, I abstained, and satisfied myself with berries, buts, and roots, which I gathered from a neighboring wood”. Page 78 “I was enabled to assist their labours. I found that the youth spent a great part of each day in collecting wood for the family fire; and during the night I often took his tools, the use of which I quickly discovered, and brought home firing sufficient for the consumption of several days”.

Clerval's personality of being a pleasing and happy guy, is 'rubbing off" on Victor when he was with Clerval. On page 39, Victor says that "I felt also sentiments of joy and affection revive in my bosom; my gloom disappeared, and in a short time I became as cheerful as before I was attacked by the fatal passion", He seems to be coming out from his downward spiral and being more optimistic. He also seems to be returing to his old self. But he uses the word "revive" to show that he was happy at one point and it was brought back again after a depression. Once again, this passage shows the difference between Clerval and Victor by how Victor was depressed, but Clerval was optimistic.

There are differences between both of these characters for Clerval is pleasing and selfless, while Victor is selfish and all about himself and his work on the creature. On page 37, Victor says that he is "lately been so deeply engaged in occupation, that I (he) have not allowed myself sufficient rest, as you see". Clerval's personality of selflessness is on page 38 when Clerval finds Victor and he is worried and exclaiming how he could be this sick; "My dear Victor," cried he, "what, for God's sake, is the matter? Do not laugh in that manner. How ill you are! What is the cause of all this?".Clearly it shows that Clerval is worried about a dear friend and is willing to help.

Didn't the Chesepeake Bay have more of a healthy enviroment than the New England Colonies, In that they had more fertile land and they had more water available(rivers).

The New England Colonies did have easier location than the Chesepeake Bay colony. But the "marshy" lands that the Chesepeake Bay Colony had, made its land more fertile for irrigation and planting than the New England Colinies. Even though the location was more convienient for the New England Colonies, the land that the Chesepeake Bay has made it more worth the time to navigate through the Marchy lands for plantations.

crudeesapeake colony was more successful in my opinion, in that it was a colony based off of its plantations of Tobacco- which got it more money in its economy later on. The House of Burgesses had control over the militia and the finances gotten. But in the New England Colonies, when Plymouth was settled, the mayflower compact was made and basically made from a “crude” government that had no real governmental decisions. Therefore, the Chesapeake colony was more successful in the standpoint of its government from success of trade, than that of its northern colony.
