I feel that Lenin was a cunning manipulator as he pretended to be close to Lenin. His opportunity rised when Lenin died.He was then the chief mourner and made people think that he was the rightful successor. He also gave trotsky the wrong date of the funeral to make it as if Stalin was the only one that cared for Lenin, therefore gaining the trust of the public
