I agree with Sandra when she defined Social Darwinism. The natural selection created by Darwin made him believe that we came from ancestors.

The similarities of Darwinism and Social Darwinism is that they are both theories that agrees with the idea of evolution. They go along with the idea of everything being related and coming from ancestors. Also, they are based on the idea of natural selection which is the process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring.

The differences between Darwinism and Social Darwinism is:

Darwinism is a theory of organic evolution claiming that new species arise and are perpetuated by natural selection.

Social Darwinism is the theory that individuals, groups, and peoples are subject to the same Darwinian laws of natural selection as plants and animals.

The difference is also that social Darwinism deals with groups of people and Darwinism is dealing with species.

I agree with what he said that Darwin's concepts have to do with evolution and how things will change over time and eventually everything will be gone. Eugenics have to do with improving genetic qualities and selective breeding such as human mating or the mating of other species. This makes it seem that this statement is false.

I disagree that Darwin's concepts contributed to eugenics because eugenics is the study of or belief in the possibility of improving the qualities of the human species or a human population. This is saying that eugenics is trying to improve the human race. However, Darwin believes that everything is related and that all life descended from a common ancestry.

I agree with Aldiana when she said that seeing the slaves on the ship influenced his thought differently about African American people because of the way they were being treated. This what he experienced at this time.

Slavery existed during this time of Darwin's beliefs. Darwin saw that there were black slaves, that were being beaten in front of his face. Darwin was thinking that if someone looked different then him, then they were not the same species as him, in this case a human. There were several different scientists that made him believe what he did. the first one was Thomas Malthus. He an economist who noted that if human population continued to grow unchecked, sooner or later there would be insufficient living space and food for everyone. Another one was Jean Baptiste Lamarck. He was one of the first scientists to recognize that living things have changed over time. He proposed selective use or disuse of organs, organisms acquired or lost certain traits during their lifetime. These traits could then be passed down to their offspring. Over time this process led to change in a species. Another one was James Hutton. James was a geologist who wrote about how geological forces that have shaped earth. He proposed that layers of rock that make up the ocean floor, mountain ranges and valleys were shaped by a variety of natural forces (examples: rain, heat, cold temperatures). The final scientist is Charles Lyell. Charles wrote a book (Principles of Geology)that Darwin read during his 5 year voyage at sea.Lyell stressed that scientists must explain past events in terms of processes that they can actually observe, since processes that shaped the Earth still influence Earth today. Lyell's influenced Darwin by promoting Darwin to ask about living things changing over time and the time: he had to realize that change took millions of years.
