Many people already have exotic animals as pets. These animals include scorpions, sugar gliders, tarantulas, bearded dragon, hissing cockroaches, hedgehogs, pythons (varies types), and even skunks. I believe that certain people should be able to own exotic pets, but only if they know how to properly take care of them. https://barkpost.com/exotic-pets-dogs/

We should use animals for testing because people can get hurt from new products that aren't on the market. People don't repopulate like the animals we use to test products on. The animals used are mostly rodents and some birds. In some cases they use cats, dogs and swine but I don't believe that happens unless it is necessary. They have several litters with multiple babies some even up to 12 babies per litter. Humans typically only have 1 or 2 babies a year. If one person dies or gets hurt it is not as easy to replace them.
