I agree with you about eugenic improving the gene, but in a way Charles Darwin did contribute to the idea. If people hadn't realized that there were certain traits that were more helpful than other traits, then there wouldn't be a need to improve a gene at all. :)
In my opinion there isn't much of a difference between Darwinism and Social Darwinism. Darwinism where evolution is though Natural selection and Social Darwinism is where it's "the survival of the fittest". Both these concepts involve a species becoming or being more likely to live and slowly dominate over the other species.
During this time in history there were slaves all over the world. There were slaves in America being sold all throughout Europe. Charles Darwin grew up during this time a slavery and observed that the slaves were receiving very inhuman treatment. Appealed by this treatment, he realized that the slave owners saw the slaves as not as good as themselves and where nothing more than servants. Through his observations Darwin concluded that since the slaves were treated so poorly that they were less evolved than he was and were yet to evolve to his level. From this he believed that that humans were originally formed from apes and eventually evolved into humans. Growing up Darwin was highly influenced by Charles Lyell, a British geologist who wrote studied and wrote about Geology. Charles lyell also influenced many other men other than Charles Darwin.
I also Agree that Darwin's concepts contributed to eugenics. Darwin's concept was Evolution through Natural Selection. Natural selection is where a certain species has specific traits that make them more likely to survive in harsh conditions. With these traits, they are able to populate more than other species and slowly become the new majority within that population. If someone could somehow get these traits and give them to give them to the species without the traits surviving, good traits, they would also be more likely to survive. This is what Eugenics is. Evolution through Natural selection helped to show that certain species have better traits to survive than others. Using this concept scientist realized that they could try to "fix or enhance" other species with these better traits. Scientist later learned that they could help people "fix or enhance" their traits also.
