Always up for expanding my literary horizons and would love to hear peoples opinions on their favourite poets/poetry collections. Please leave a short (or long!) description on why you find this individuals work so powerful/intriguing/inspiring/whatever!
This is not an attack on theists, I have no issue with someone believing in God and practicing worship. This is a debate on whether religious institutions, such as the Catholic church, and doctrine, like the Bible, are hindering mankinds advancements in science, medicine, education and human rights (e.g. teaching creationism as scientific theory in schools, opposition to stem cell research, preaching inequality for homosexuals etc.)
I know this is one of those topics that's impossible to quantify but I am interested to hear peoples opinions (and hopefully gain some knowledge). No boundries, could be biological, astrological, archaeological - whatever discovery has grabbed your attention the most and helped us as a species gain a greater understanding of science or history.
Here are some nominations, but if you think I've missed someone out let me know:
Isaac Newton for discovering gravity.
Galileo Galilei for his research in astronomy.
Charles Darwin for his theory of evolution.
Albert Einstein for his theory of relativity.
Edwin Hubble for developing 'Hubble's Law' (the main evidence to support 'the big bang' theory).
Tim Berners-Lee for inventing the internet.
Which leader do you think did more to change and improve the way of life for people in the United Kingdom?
I'm trying to be as objective as possible with my suggestions, which are:
Oliver Cromwell
Robert Peel
David Lloyd-George
Winston Churchill
Clement Attlee
Margaret Thatcher
The list is not supposed to be exhaustive so please feel free to make other suggestions.
