The topic of objective morality has been brought up several times before on this site, but rarely have we seen the philosophy of Ayn Rand mentioned. The philosophy in its entirety may not be known to most users, so I think it's appropiate to begin debating the premise that the universe is an objective absolute and the standard of moraility is rational self-interest.
This is a debate about the works of the two mentioned philosophers, those bringing in others will be banned. In an effort to keep the debates as intelligent as possible, I won't describe their positions on morality. This ensures only those with prior knowledge or those willing to research will comment.
Im sure there has been a debate like this before but I haven't seen one in a while and the normal recuring debates are getting a little old.. Do religious establishment deserve the tax exemptions?
I am in a debate with someone about whether or not atheism is a religion. Im sur there has been a debate like this before, but I have not seen it. What do you think?
Is religion a form of escapism? Is it merely a means of people finding ways to cope with their fear of death? Some may find the answer quite obvious to them but I encourage you to think through what warrants escapism.
Deontology has several meanings but its meaning in the field of political theory is the that the means justify the ends. The taken action must be the one with the best utility(which is defined as the amount of "goodness" to it). The foundation of the left takes such an approach to it's implementation of both economics and it's view on social issues. The right's ideology is based on(or is supposed to) the individual aspect of a society. (there are political theory terms like deontology I could use however these are the subject of debate since consequentialism is hard to apply in our system but it definitely can be said the majority of republicans would agree with it). If there were 9 patients, and 8 of them were on the brink of death, and the 9th patient was perfectly healthy, and the other 8 could be saved and restored to full health if the doctor harvested the organs from the 9th, what action should be taken? Deontology would argue that the life of the 9th doesn't equal the life of 8 people. Importance of Individual would argue that the elimination of the 9th patient is wrong(morally, legally, religiously, whatever they wanna pick to establish their position). Who is correct?
Texas is considering passing laws that would allow employees to bring firearms they are legally allowed to own to work. These laws would give employers immunity from liability in problems caused by said firearms.
True capitalism is a barbaric state of economy where people will live or die based on there actions, no government back up for you at all. Representative Socialism is a idealist state hoping to achieve a certain level of stability for a certain standard of living for its population. Which is better?
