Donald Trump was off by a long shot on Wednesday when he said in his press conference that 96 million people in the United States wanted to work and could not find jobs. For a moment, it was possible to believe he had misspoken — 9.6 million would be in the ballpark. But as soon as “96 million” came out of his mouth, he underscored it to show he meant it. “You know that story,” he said. “The real number — that’s the real number.”There are not now and never have been 96 million people in the United States out of work and looking for jobs. There are currently 7.5 million unemployed job seekers and another 2.3 million jobless people who aren’t currently looking for a job, but probably would be if they thought they would find one.Ninety-six million is about the number of Americans, age 16 and older, who are students, retirees, disabled, stay-at-home parents or otherwise not in the workforce. To say, as Mr. Trump did, that it is the number of unemployed job seekers is clearly wrong. But why didn’t the number jump out at him as impossibly huge? One answer may be that he is so invested in his narrative about the nation’s disastrous conditions – the narrative in which he is the savior – that he thoughtlessly accepts and repeats anything that appears to confirm that storyline.Source: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/11/opinion/donald-trumps-bogus-jobs-number.html?_r=0
Attorney General Loretta Lynch said schools that don't comply may face lawsuits or lose federal aid if they do not comply. One senior Republican politician has condemned the move as the "beginning of the end" of the current school system. In a separate move, the president also strengthened protections for LGBT people receiving health care. The federal government is fighting the state of North Carolina in court over a law requiring people to use toilets according to their gender at birth. However the Obama administration education and justice departments say public schools must respect transgender pupils' gender identity even if their education records or identity documents indicate a different sex."There is no room in our schools for discrimination of any kind, including discrimination against transgender students on the basis of their sex," Ms Lynch said.Read more: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-36286111

Scar-less wounds could be the future, according to a new study which has developed an alternative healing process. Doctors at the University of Pennsylvania have worked out out how to manipulate lesions so they heal as regenerated skin as opposed to scar tissue. It would mean marks made from operations or plastic surgery would be barely visible to the untrained eye.The discovery, if rolled out mainstream, would provide relief to countless patients - not least women who undergo a cesarean section or intrusive operations. It would also, no doubt, be a win for plastic surgery patients, who could flawlessly disguise their nips and tucks. In his latest Twitter rant, President-elect Donald Trump said on Saturday that 'only 'stupid' people or fools' would dismiss closer ties with Russia. He added: 'We have enough problems without yet another one,' and said Russians would respect 'us far more' under his administration than they do with Barack Obama in the White House. Trump remained unswayed after his classified briefing on an intelligence report that accused Moscow of meddling on his behalf in the election that catapulted him to power.
