Winning Position: Douchebag
I think Peterson is a truly rare find: a genuinely intelligent Conservative. He isn't just pretending like most Conservatives love to do.Have a look at the short debate he has below with a transgender professor about the use of alternate pronouns to describe transsexual students. This is an issue -- perhaps the only issue -- on which I sympathise greatly with the right. I think the transgenders are being absolutely ridiculous. However, I still would eventually have to side with the left because it is an issue of discrimination. If someone calls you a word which you consider defamatory and which hurts your feelings, then I believe you should have some right not to be called that word.Anyway, I digress. Peterson gave an articulate and powerful argument, but if you watch closely you will see he trips himself up midway through. Peterson's defence is that this is a freedom of speech issue: that he has the right to question ideas and articulate his own thoughts as he sees fit. But then comes the clanger. As is absolutely typical of most right wingers, he is unable to last a full debate without invoking the Holocaust (bizarre and irritating given that it was the right who were responsible for it), but this appears to be something he was doing out of habit more than anything else, because he quickly shut down his direction with the claim, "That's obviously different."But hang on Jordan, buddy. No, it isn't different. If you should have the freedom to question or criticise ideas you don't agree with, then other people should also have that right. If you can question some ideas but not others then it isn't freedom of speech you are advocating at all, is it? It's the opposite of freedom of speech. You want people to be able to ask questions about or criticise only those ideas which you disagree with, while the ones you agree with are off limits. That's a Peterson dictatorship, not freedom of speech. In my opinion, I believe he undermined his entire argument by bringing up the Holocaust, and furthermore I think he knew it too, which is why he skirted away from the subject mere seconds after he brought it up.
