Anyone on here into EDM?
I'm not a lover of Genre boundaries so anything really, my own personal taste and style is techno and techouse, but I listen to most styles of music, given that most on here are Americans,
I'm pretty sure there'll be some negative comments by those whose music collection doesn't stray much from Eminem or Avenged Sevenfold, but I said I'd ask anyway.
Something I've been thinking about recently is normality, i.e. being normal.
I'm often described as weird because I don't like certain things (eg) Football, Pop music, inane conversation, not that it bothers me, but it does make me wonder.
There seems to me to be an unending array of new "personality disorders" being named and, most pertinently to my point, treated, the global figures for sales of antidepressants, beta blockers etc is phenomenal.
Have we as a society developed an ideal that most think they must aspire to and are not right if they don't?
Is this ideal imaginary?
Just look at the actions and words of people when in an anonymous setting, on the internet. It goes to show that most people aren't truly being themselves, I mean we are a societal species and the development of an ideal society is just as open to the flaws of humanity as any other trait, as has been seen in the many failed attempts of our ancestors.
What I'd like to ask is the following:
Does anybody else either feel this way or at least agree to some extent?
Is there a perceived normality that doesn't actually define anybody, but defines the aspirations of many?
Is this actually a healthy pursuit, given the multitudinous ways in which we are defining personality by disorder rather than type?
I've found out today that my home town is putting in a bid to host the Gay games, formerly known as the Gay Olympics, besides the obvious jokes about contenders beating off stiff competition and categories for handball, muff diving and bob's-lay, it made me feel like there's something fundamentally wrong with having a Gay Olympics, The special Olympics is for the mentally retarded and the paralympics for those that are physically disabled, do moves like this only hurt the gay cause?
For a group that wants to be treated the same as everyone else, does this not further bolster the idea that gay people are different.
What would the gay community say if there was a straight Olympics?
I am referring to the word "cunt"
I have found in my personal experience that Americans take great insult and show disgust at it's utterance.
It's meaning is a woman's genitals, other words for this area don't cause as much butt-hurt, such as pussy, flange, sugar basin, bone yard, sausage wallet, wizards sleeve, hatchet mark, bearded clam, cock socket and so on.
Where I am from it's just part of the vernacular, although most swear words are not used in every situation they are used a lot when talking amongst friends, if anyone does get offended it's usually women.
This is assuming that men stay exactly as they are, save for the fact that they and not women become pregnant
Would abortion be such a hot topic?
Would religions have such a problem with it?
What do CDers think of these ideas for the site, before I make a suggestion to Andy
I'm often in a debate, and you tell someone they've said something in a different debate, or wish to show a different argument in an old debate, and have to go linking the entire debate, some of which can be annoying to navigate especially once there's a ton of posts and I think it would be handy if instead of linking the debate, one could open an argument in a new tab and link straight to it.
Also I was also thinking that the window in which we type our arguments is kinda small, especially when a sizable response is called for, I think it would be cool if the typing window was openable as a new window or at least bigger.
So, watcha think?
I post this debate as most of the users on this site are American and wish to get a collection of opinions I'll let it be known that I don't know much about American politics, but this is something I was thinking about while listening to American politicians harp on about God.
From what I know the US was supposed to be a secular state, are the religious views of politicians just a way to garner votes or has the government become run by christians?
I wonder what it means for the future of discovery and scientific inquiry in America (a country that has always been instrumental in research), the ID movement is a resolutely American move.
Tell me I'm wrong if you know better, I probably wont be able to take part in this debate too much, but will be reading intently.
Is everyone else losing their New argument activity notices?
It used to happen sparingly, but recently it's happening all the time, I reckon I'm losing about 50% of my notices.
I go into a debate that I've posted in and see that there has been disputes that I've not been notified of.
We have comedy and sports, I was thinking a music category on here to share music we've made or artists we like to firstly spread the word and secondly debate their merits would be interesting.
What say you Cders?
Firstly, I'd like to explain that for the sake of discussion I'm asserting that Free will does not exist and the question is based on your belief:
If you believe in an omniscient God, that created all, then you have to admit that omniscience precludes free will.
If you want to use science to explain your universe, and do believe what physics tells us, you believe there can be an all unifying theory of everything, then (there is a possiblity) that this will imply that all actions are a result of forces outside of our control.
If neither of these things are your forte, consider instinct, an animal that knows nothing of cause and effect and with no previous experience with the phenomena, will still back away from fire or a precipice, human babies not so much as we've evolved to the point that we're completely dependent on our parents protection.
Also consider a coin toss, if you have a decision you need to make between two options, you can toss a coin for it, try it, i guarantee you'll know before the result is revealed exactly which side you wish it to be, is this because subconsciously you already knew what you wanted, but needed to feel like there was a decision to be made.
Our actions are determined by our brain, therefore it needs to process information before it can tell us the course of action we should take, and our brain functions like the rest of our bodies by the capture and release of chemicals, are we at the mercy of our genetic potentials? Autonomously carrying out actions over which our conscience has the illusion of control, a control that can be illustrated best when it goes wrong, as in the behaviors of those with mental disorders.
Professor Richard Dawkins, coined the term Meme, to be units of cultural significance, a gene influence manifest as a phenotype that while it has no physical form has an effect on our probability of success, could the illusion of freewill be a meme-like manifestation of our need to survive, can the illusion of freewill and the comfort it gives a mind that is becoming more aware of it's environment be just that?
I do admit that there is currently no way to know for sure, but I'd like to get the opinions of others.
I'll assume that most people on here have Reddit accounts, if not, then you could set one up.
When you make a debate or see a really interesting one, link it to a specific subReddit such as /r/atheism (http://www.reddit.com/r/atheism/), then add a link to it into the debate's description.
We as a group can then upvote the Reddit post so it gets noticed. Getting it to the front page if lucky. This will be seen by millions of people and probably drum up some much needed attention for the site.
Not to compare us to 4chan, but there is something to be learned from /b/ and how much they get done as a group whether or not what they do is noble, it could work for us.
As links are the point of Reddit, this isn't spamming, or at least I hope it isn't. What say you?
What does it say about society that mainstream movies that are made specifically to depict graphic violence as realistically as possible (Saw, Hostel, Human Centipede) but genuine sex scenes are considered too graphic?
How can splitting a persons ankles in full view or sewing a persons mouth to another's anus be OK, while aroused genitals and scenes of penetration (which are perfectly natural) are strictly forbidden?
Just to be clear I have no problem with either, I just consider it interesting that one which we regard asevil is right, while the other is not.
If God has planned the life of every living thing down to the very moment of their demise, should abortion not be part of this plan?
If God plans abortions then Christians that campaign against it are disobeying their God.
Do these Christians have the right to protest and still be called Christians?
Check out this and give an opinion.
If God is infinitely Benevolent, why would he create the fundamental needs like eating, drinking, breathing and sleeping? Why would he design a planet that is so inhospitable? Why would he give young men and women sexual urges? Why would he create Satan, greed, pestilence, war, pedophilia, rape, etc etc? Why?
