My hypothesis is that he is some type of savant who is extremely good at poker among other things because of the way his brain sees codes and patterns but also it makes him see codes and patterns in everything and it basically drives him insane and makes him see connections that aren't there.

Now, let me be clear and honest in stating that I am not an expert on the Sherlock Holmes universe, I have read part of the first original book, watched an older TV series and the relatively new one set in more modern times along with the movies, that's about it.
From my Analysis of Sherlock Holmes, he is a savant in the area of deduction itself and surpasses all others in this regard, but also displays an arsenal of knowledge and skills that qualify him as a polymath, which is quite unlike a "savant" type person.
He is versed as a musician, swordsman, boxer and marksman, he has a profound understanding of chemistry, law and even psychology despite being a possible aspergers case. Although he is willfully ignorant about many things he could easily learn, because he wishes to reserve his mental space for only what he deems relevant material.
Mycroft and Sherlock differ in that Mycroft does not have aspergers but he is also not a genius, just a very smart and somewhat sociopathic normal person. Mycroft is an intelligence agent, and he is an alpha male among the bureaucracy of intelligence agents, but he is an agent of the establishment whereas Sherlock is an agent of his own curiosities and search for an adrenaline rush.

When I was a teenager I found some alt right type of people on the internet.
They were white nationalists, neo-nazis, KKK, and everything in between. I came to them as a semi-trolling experiment and also out of curiosity. I of course was acting and hiding my identity to "fit in" as I gathered information and looked for potential "weak spots" to exploit.
Never have I seen such a retched hive of scum and villainy before or since. They explained to me all of their crazy theories about the origins of different races, about how ethnic cleansing could be achieved, and how "niggers are shitting in the gene pool".
Something I noticed, every one of them seemed to either be a Christian or hold some occult type of beliefs.
This reminds me, Hitler was an occultist not a christian in actuality. I have known this for a long time from learning where his beliefs about race really come from (Some of this I learned from the actual Nazis I spoke to).
One example is the Vril society and the "root races" occult mumbo jumbo that partially inspired Nazism.
