I think that it was bad that Johnny killed Bob because even though it was self defence the Socs might not have killed Ponyboy, also because this caused a lot of trouble for him and ponyboy.

It was justified because Johnny did this to save Ponyboy who was being drowned and could have died. Also because he was defending himself, because they were beating him up.
