The United States has morphed Puerto Rico into a mini-state. The country has 51 seats in its house of representatives and 27 seats in the Senate. Their leader is an elected "Governor" not a President. Therefore they could be open to becoming the new state. Second, our federal court system is been processed into the Puerto Rican legal system. Our military has a standing presence in this area for army bases and bombing runs. The United States has control over the same areas as it does when it comes to the current states in the US. Under the 10th amendment, federalism comes into the play. America controls social security, immigration, and even the postal service in Puerto Rico. What haven't we done to transform Puerto Rico into awesomeness?

The act of allowing Puerto Rico to join the United States of America as a fully functional and constitutionally sound state would create the people of this island as equal to those living in the US today. Currently the citizens in Puerto Rico have all the advantages of being a part of our great nation without the burden of taxation and some of the rights that the US citizens currently own. Instead of being a colony the island of Puerto Rico should be a full-fledged State of the US or an independent country on its own. The states of the America have all been through the process of becoming states after colonies then territories, and this process must be applied directly to Puerto Rico as well. Just as how Hawaii was added as a island that belongs to the US so should this beautiful island. While it is not only fair to the other states that must pay taxes to the governemnt, the territory of PR should also pay the taxes that we do in order to take full advantage of the rights that the Constitution entitles us. In the eyes of the citizens of PR, they must abideby many of the rules laid out by the US government without any representation. THis is in itself an unfair burden. The people of Puerto Rico have been under the authority of the US government for long enough and it is time for a decision to be made to allow them to join this great nation.

I think that Puerto Rico should become a state in the United States of America because of three main reasons. First off, as a territory Puerto Rico is basically mooching off America. Currently, Puerto Rico as a U.S. territory Puerto Rico receives the protection of the United States in time of war. They also receive the benefits of being U.S. citizens without having to pay taxes to the U.S. government. Becoming a state would give Puerto Rico the opportunity of improving its economic situation. Puerto Rico will receive taxes from their citizens to build the infrastructure of the state. They will have an open market to trade with all nations that are in alliance with the U.S. This would also make them accountable for contributing to our and now their nation. The second main reason is that by becoming a state Puerto Rico would be able to gain a foothold in congress which would help to break that ever occurring tie between republicans and democrats. By becoming a state P.R. would gain 2 spots at congress which is given to them by the constitution. And finally the united states would gain a new and ever growing vacation resort which in turn would help our economy immensely. I feel that this new tropical vacation spot would draw a lot of attention to the U.S. and ultimately be better for Puerto Rico as well. That’s why it should be a state.

Puerto Rico is under control of the United States of America and its laws. It holds no responsibility for its “National Defense, Interstate trade, Foreign relations and commerce, customs administration, control of air and sea, immigration and emigration, nationality and citizenship, currency, maritime laws, military services, military bases, Army, Navy and Air Force, Declaration of War, Constitutionality of laws, Jurisdictions and legal procedures, treaties, radio and television, and other communications.” (topuertorico.org) The United States and “US firms have invested heavily in Puerto Rico since the 1950s,” (CIA World Factbook) and we have losing money and increasing our debt. By having Puerto Rico as a state, the U.S. would still provide the same stuff it gives them plus the ability to participate in Elections. The only down side for them would be having to pay national taxes to the U.S. which is only fair since every state and its residence pay them. In addition Puerto Pico has “A diverse industrial sector has far surpassed agriculture as the primary locus of economic activity and income. Encouraged by duty-free access to the US and by tax incentives,” (CIA World Factbook)

Since manifest destiny and western expansion began in the 1800s, American imperialism has integrated new territories into congressional representation. The process has stalled since world war two. There are multiple american territories that have citizens that pay taxes and enlist in selective service yet they have no proper representation as states of the union.

Since 1889, Puerto Rico has been a commonwealth of the United States and it is time for it to be instituted as the 51st state. There are multiple significant reasons why Puerto Rico should join the nation officially as a state. First off, there government has already been set up like those of the states. For instance their leader is an elected Governor. The United States also already controls activities such as social security, postal services, and immigration associated with Puerto Rico. Aside from the correspondence it has with the already admitted states, Puerto Rico is exempt from the IRS code and is not represented in Congress. Seeing as Puerto Rico already is parallel to the concepts of a state it would only make sense for it to be declared as one to become the 51st.

Since 1959, the people of Puetro Rico have either rejected or accepted statehood of becoming part of the United States. Since then we have not been able to conclude the final decision. Puerto Rico is a self-Goverened association with strong connections to the United States. Puerto Rico has been a U.S. Territory since 1898, still Puerto Rico has no Direct representation to the United States. I Strongly believe that we should accept Puerto Rico as a 51st state. Puerto Rico has authority over its internal Affairs, The United States controls interstate trade, commerce, immigration and emigration, navy and airforce, etc... Puerto Rico is currently assisted by the United states so why not add the association to our country.

Although, the United States would have to contribute a large sum of money to annex Puerto Rico. Think of the money and Benefits that the United States would gain. We would strongly benefit from, the military, trade, environment, etc...The United States would add the money that Puerto Rico is gaining to our country, which would extend our Budget.

The cons of Puerto Rico becoming a state are not only plentiful but apparent. The main reason being that the native inhabitants will not be able and will not want to adapt to the changes presented in becoming a state. Already, living there is too much for some Puerto Rican families to handle. It becoming a state will only push the cost of living further, mainly from the introduction of federal taxes to their people.

Another difficulty in adapting would be the change in their main language. Many natives would not be able to adapt to American society, and may even disrupt peace through protest. This along with many other factors, such as how no longer will they be able to compete in world events like as Miss Universe and the Olympics, will strip them of their independence, which will cause further protest.

All of these cons lead to unnecessary conflict. The United States doesn’t need another state. We have too many to deal with as it is.

They share most rights as americans except they cant vote in elections.

They dont pay federal taxes like we do. We control their foreign affairs and have military installations there. They have a governor whom can serve as many terms as he/she would like.

We pretty much run puerto rico in a sense that we have a large impact upon their government with our own government. They dont really follow the same basis of our U.S. government we pay taxes. Also have the right to vote in national elections. I dont think that puerto rico should be a state. I would like it as a common wealth of America.

With the many steps we have taken to ensure PR these rights, allowing them to vote would only be the ethical thing to do considering what we already force them to do. After already controlling every aspect of their political, economical and social areas of life, the common sense thing to do would be to justify it all by making it offically a State.

Theres no point in allowing Puerto Rico becoming a state because 51 states is a odd number and to top that off we will have to take all their debt add it on to ours and were even deeper trouble. They have been under United States for a while and theres no reason to change that if its not broke dont fix it! Also the state is highly friendly so we dont want to destroy a friendship we have and trade relations.

No man.... the name is Puerto Rico which means rich port in Spanish. Its obvious that the acquisition of Puerto Rico will benefit the United States financially as we will tax them and gain a new popular tropical resort destination which is sure to gain mucho monedas!!!!!!

43.5% of the Island receives some type of government assistance. Taxing them would only earn us $547 million a year, a relatively small amount. Also, only 6% of Puerto Rico's economy comes from tourism.

Puerto Rico is an island with lots of cultural worth, with a literacy rate at 94.6% and a per captia of $18,000 it is clear that Puerto Rico has some promise. But are they really ready to become the 51st state? I don’t think so, I feel that Puerto Rico’s economy would do nothing but harm to our already failing economy. When you incorporate an island whose per capita is just over half of the average per captia of Texas then what good could come out of it?

I think that Puerto Rico should not become a state because the commonwealth doesn’t bring anything major to the rest of the nation. The territory is able to be maintained through the use of U.S government funding, and will surely fall into the 3rd world category if the U.S stop giving them assistance. Another reason Puerto Rico should not become a state is because the majority of Puerto Ricans do not want their territory to become a U.S state. They are happy with the status quo and want to remain a Commonwealth. Puerto Rico does not file taxes, and it is scrounging off of American Federal Aid and it does not restore any of its stipends. So Puerto Rico should not become a state because it does not add anything useful to the United States.

Yet if Puerto Rico were to become a state the U.S. would be recieving IRS and taxes from the people, thus helping our economy. You even say so yourself that that they are 'scrounging off of American Federal Aid and it does not restore any of its stipends. In this case, Puerto Rico is like a parasite and not assisting the U.S., but instead hurting it. If it were to be admitted as a state this problem would be solved and not be inexistence.

A study on the financial impacts of Puerto Rican statehood showed that annexation would cost the U.S. Government around $25 billion. With our national debt so high and a health care bill on the way, we really can't afford to annex Puerto Rico.
