A Bernie Sanders Quote for discussion

Bernie Sanders recently said, “I understand that the issues of abortion and gay marriage are issues that you feel very strongly about. We disagree on those issues. I get that. But let me respectfully suggest that there are other issues out there that are of enormous consequence to our country and in fact to the entire world that maybe, just maybe, we do not disagree on and maybe, just maybe, we can try to work together to resolve them.”

Do you agree that issues such as abortion and gay marriage should be dismissed, or at least temporarily put aside so that other topics may be addressed. Do you agree that there may be many more topics that the two parties may agree on and these controversial topics are taking up an unbalanced amount of focus? Or is it alright that these topics are getting the attention they are getting because so many people are so passionate about it? What are your thoughts?

I absolutely love that quote. American politics is dominated by social issues which eclipse all other matters, including ones that are in many ways "more" important. Now I don't believe that means we must completely dismiss such issues: Indeed, I find civil rights issues to be quite important and many find abortion to be quite important. But there are indeed issues which both sides do agree on, and they are topics that everyone should indeed work together to solve.

Sadly, I doubt that will ever happen, as it will mean that whichever party is in control at the time will get "credit", and the other side (be they Democratics or Republicans) will almost certainly not allow that.

I do not think that Sanders was suggesting we dismiss or table issues such as abortion or gay marriage. What I imagine he was trying to convey is that maybe these should not be the sole or decisive points upon which someone determines who they are voting for.

Yes, I agree, I may have phrased that badly in the description. Thank's for clarifying.

Seems rather silly to ask if we should stop discussing the topic that the Supreme Court ended the discussion on decades ago and the topic that they just ended the discussion on. Yes. Discuss things that will fix the economy. Discuss things that will proptect the country.

In his Gettysberg Address Abraham Lincoln said "Government of the people for the people by the people", so if some of those people want to make same sex marriage legal their right to do falls within that criteria and they have the right to sustain discussion upon it for as long as they can sustain it or until it becomes law.

But, it is law. Why are we still discussing it?

Because sometimes we don't want to shut up about things that fucking mattered. Sometimes it's time to actually celebrate what we succeeded changing rather than only discussing what the fuck is still wrong.

I understood a few states still resisted. Is it now Federal law - nationwide .....?

I think Bernie Sanders is a good bullshitter and is trying to say that forcing women to get pregnant even in cases of rape and/or preventing gays form the same privileges as straights is somehow not worth discussing or changing but his retarded ass brain doesn't comprehend that if it wasn't violently fought for these thigns wouldn't have been changed and the gay marriage thing is still not 100% working out in many states.

He's been fighting hard for gay rights and abortion for decades. He's just pointing out that more exist than things like abortion, gay marriage, gun control, and so on. And his key point here is that many of the things we aren't talking about the two parties agree on, and the division doesn't have to be as big and disastrous as it is right now.

So basically he's contradicting his former self... That's more funny than it is respectable.

He is a "Democratic Socialist," which is separate from the Marxist-Leninist form of socialism you have in your mind.
