A Global Warming solution we can all live with.

Build and install solar panels on every desert in the world.  The electricity generated will initially be used to power the rest of the world.  This will help start the reduction of CO2 in the air.

Any remaining electricity would be used to power desalination plants that will convert ocean water into clean, fresh, drinking water that can be dumped on the desert to create giant fresh water lakes.  The fresh water will be used for agriculture to feed the world.  Everyone will have uncontaminated water.  The water will also be used to keep the solar panels clean of sand after every sand storm.

Any land not used to hold water, agriculture or human dwelings will be used to plant giant forests to further increase the amount of CO2 being removed from the air and the rate at which it is removed.

A one world government can achieve this by nationalizing the industries necessary for the project and either using slave labor or taking the money from the rich.

If and when it comes down to the survival of the human race all morals and rules are out the window.

But other then the slave labor lol everything sounds good to me : )

How about getting Monsanto to develop seeds for fruits and vegetables that make most people sterile? The less people, the less CO2 released into the air. It will also help with over population. We would kill 2 birds with one stone ;)

Side: Let's do it!

Can the salt from the desalination plants be used to store CO2? Maybe we can turn the salt into giant cubes and use them to build human dwellings ;)

Side: Let's do it!

Once we have converted a large amount of salt water into fresh water, we allow the poles to freeze again, thus removing even more water from the oceans; giving us more land. ;)

Biggest problem with this is how to distribute the energy. Moving electricity across large distances is very wasteful and I guess the circuits would require a lot of maintenance. I don't know how to solve that problem in a cost-efficient way.

I don't really have a cost-effective solution for it, but if we're willing to spend it could be accomplished and worthwhile.

We'd need high capacity storage- likely in the form of large sodium-sulfur batteries. We'd also need some serious transformers; we need to convert to AC, and we need to push the voltage very high- far higher than standard power transmission- to minimize loss over the long distances.

I think this is the kind of thing we need to bite the bullet, tighten our belts, and put a good bit of resources into. The initial cost would be staggering, but maintenance costs would be much smaller. I don't have hard figures, but it would likely take a couple of generations for the savings to compensate for the initial investment. That's a very hard sell, but I feel it's something we need to do.

I'm not sure how it is worldwide, but we in the US have a bad habit of letting future generations carry the burden of decisions we make. I think it's about time to look past that and put some effort in on behalf of the future.

Seems realistic. I have heard that higher voltage reduces the effects of resistance, so it seems like this is be one important piece of the puzzle.

... we in the US have a bad habit of letting future generations carry the burden of decisions we make

I recognize that as a world wide problem. I think an argument can be made that due economic growth and technological advancement, it will be cheaper for the future generations to solve our problems than it is for us now. There are many ways to justify neglecting our problems for future generations to take care off. Ethics, while evolving, hasn't focused on intergenerational ethics yet.

I think it's pretty clear that the people of the future, despite not being physically real have morale rights, albeit different from our own. So yes, I do believe we have to be more mindful of the future generations.

If we weren't seeing CO2 levels creep up the way they were, I'd note concern about the environmental impact of redistributing so much solar energy from our deserts...

But since we are, I say full speed ahead. I cant imagine the consequences would be worse than simply maintaining the status quo.

Side: Let's do it!

Actually, maintaining the status quo may be the best solution of all. There is no initial investment. It will kill millions (I hate people ;). As people die off, less and less CO2 will be generated and rush hour traffic will become a thing of the past. As cities go under water, we will have some really cool dive sites. We'll also have ice free land that hasn't been explored yet. Imagine what treasures we may find. ;)

Side: Let's do it!

While I don't want to support a course that will kill a lot of people...

The diver in me is intrigued by your proposition. It would be awesome to dive in a submerged city.
