A nation is considered great by its great people. Great artists, scientists, industrialists, merchants, philosophers and inventors define a nation's greatness. Stealing from those who are great and giving to those who lazy and stupid does not make a country great.
Because the UAE is a developing country, they really were not that right until very recently. This a picture of Dubai from, when? 1950? 1960? Try 1990. They have only recently become incredibly wealthy due to their oil resources.
Saudi Arabia is theocratic monarchical dictatorship that nationalized all its oil fields, if you're trying to critique capitalism, its not the best example.
Actually, it is. The debate creator and I were discussing capitalism when he asked me this question, he then turned it into this debate, so yes, capitalism is the object of the debate.
The rich people can be rich in a non-capitalist society: i.e. feudalism.
The poor are the minimum of the country. If you judged a teacher by how well his genius students are doing, and not by the majority of failing students, it wouldn't be accurate.
The answer I feel is correct is: neither. Use GDP, Gini coefficient, HDI, Life expectancy, Fertility rate, Adult literacy, percent of children of school age in school, employment rate... &c;&c;&c;.
The rowdy people are few- call them the bums and criminals in society. The rest all need the teacher's help, or a third of the class will fail at least, and the others won't get decent marks. This class does not represent the society at all in developing countries- but does represent the society in well developed countries.
The debate creator's intentions don't matter. if it can be taken another way, it will and shall be taken another way- just like analysing literature.
I'm not saying rowdy and stupid in reference to students with ADHD who have other interests or smart students who have no interest in the subject. I'm referring to students who signed up for a class and when they show up they just sleep and throw paper airplanes. There are those who have trouble learning and those who refuse to learn, those who refuse to learn should not tarnish a teachers reputation.
If they are low intelligence and rowdy, honestly, what could they gain from a teacher? Yes, they may be able to get a few basic concepts down, but the rest of it would just be memorization and they would forget it a few days after being tested on it. So, if a teacher fails to grant them the illusion of knowledge and intelligence, then how have they failed?
Did you read what I wrote? I said they would not be able to get a grasp of anything that wasn't a basic concept, everything else would just be simple memorization that they would forget. Not memorizing is the only way.
Since UAE has no resources except oil, the property of UAE is very erratic; thus, it is constantly experiencing extreme booms and busts due to the low interest rates for real estate, plus since all oil reserves are nationalized, all wealth is concentrated in the royalty. There is very little capitalism in the UAE considered most of its resources are government owned.
Rich people in a society lacking coercion in the market place are neccessarly dependent on a strong consumer population, and are far more likely to invest in public services to aid the lower class.
When individuals become wealthy through a free marketplace(necessarily devoid of government favoritism, loopholes, etc.) they do so through being a consistently preferable provider of services. In order to guarantee the continuing of personal prosperity, the healthy purchasing power of the consumer base is very important to the individual with wealth. They are more likely to take part in providing a safety net that isn't dependent on immoral means(theft and other forms of coercion).
Markets only destroy! I know that you're just a SAAAaavage beast, but I acknowledge that capitalism is a destructive system! All it does it allow the rich to steal from the poor! If we had democratic socialism and made it illegal to be greedy we could solve so many problems!
Look, I have a degree, but since you can't gain my knowledge because you are a capitalist and capitalists can't get degrees because they are SAAAAAAaaaaaavagly stupid, watch The Billionaires' Tea Party, it will explain to you how the capitalists stole our democracy of the people! Capitalism sucks and will always suck, you've just been tricked into believing it is good by the Koch Brothers!~
Look, I have a degree as well, so you savage theory is false. I am not going to watch that movie. Nobody tricked me into believing capitalism it is good.
See, I told you that you were ignorant and I was right! You refuse to watch a movie the exposes the liberty movement for what it really is! You're so SAAAAAaaaaavage that you won't even watch a movie! The Koch Brothers are behind the entire movement, its not real, you're all tricked!
Because I already saw that series and it was SAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaavage! Watch "The Billionaire's Tea Party" and then we'll talk, it is made by a very intelligent journalist, I know he is smart because he is from Europe and Europe is a utopia!
But a nation is bound together as one object, that's why in this question they say a nation. The people of a nation need to be united together to be great.
It couldn't be the other option. If the greatness of a nation depended on how rich the rich are then think of this scenario. The richest man in the world decides to make an army to take over, lets say, The Gambia. He takes it over and leaves the Gambians in poverty. He is now the richest leader in the world. Is that now the greatest nation in the world?
A nation is rich only in terms of what it contributes to the world. If a nation contributes only greed, war, and misery then it is totally useful and is poor in terms of overall, meaningful contribution to the human experience.
To be rich is to be a contributor to general happiness, welfare of the world.
The U.S. contributes McDonalds and Hollywood movies. It's what makes us great. People all over the world enjoy a nice burger with their movie. If it weren't for McDonalds and a movie, people woldn't date and get laid. The U.S. helping people get laid all around the world. ;)
As I had pointed out before the rich charge people above the cost of production 300% to 400% markup for the goods the produce. If this isn't greed; What is?
You probably didn't know that diamonds are not rare, but what they do is only sell a very same amount of them. This keeps the price of them at a high level. De Beers actually handles diamonds in such a vast quantity that they are moved with pay-loaders and dump trucks.
So? What is wrong with making money from selling something you produce? If someone is willing to pay me $1,000 for a drawing that took me 2 minutes to draw I'd be crazy not to sell it to them. Something is worth whatever people are willing to pay for it, if people are willing to pay $300 for something that cost $100 to produce, then it is worth $300.
The fact that rough diamonds are moved in dump trucks is irrelevant, its like saying that gold isn't valuable because its moved in dump trucks. Its a diamond mine not a diamond pile with only a few. And yes, De Beers chose not to flood the market with his own product, why should he do that? Although the imperialistic side of what was going on in South Africa in terms of diamonds is immoral, him only supplying what is demanded is not immoral.
Oh and PS: Diamonds are rare, there is just a larger supply then demand, they are still very rare compared to most substances... but you probably didn't even do a 5 minute fact check to figure that out.
You make accusations about me not checking things out and you're the one with the Internet in front of you and said you knew nothing about Mellon.
I didn't have to do a fact check, I know the facts and even apply links most of the time so people like you don't have to struggle typing stuff into Google.

Mellon is an industrialist with a long legacy, you don't do 5 minute fact checks on people like that when you're going to be judging them.

You said diamonds aren't rare, that is not a fact, not even close to being true...
Mellon brothers were into banking and made a fat fortune taking over companies. Their heirs are listed in Forbes richest people list.
I don't want a lesson on the Mellon brothers from you, when I find the time I'll read about them my self.
Diamonds aren't as rare as they are made out to be and so my point is valid. A man made shortage doesn't make something rare, only scarce.
"You probably didn't know that diamonds are not rare" - Thewayitis
Diamonds are a very rare stone, so no, just because there is a larger supply then demand doesn't make them not rare. Also, you have to remember, that the diamonds are not mined cut, they are mined rough, not every diamond is a quality diamond that can be sold. Doesn't matter if there is a forced scarcity or not (not exactly scarcity because the demand is being met very well) the stones are still very rare.
Have you seen any Senators or Congressman giving up their pay or benefits and all of them are already rich? I'd call it greed to continue to give themselves pay raises and take benefits when those they represent are poorer than them, one cannot call it generosity.
"Teenagers leave home now while you still know everything." This quote comes to mind whenever I attempt to debate with you. Wait until you get some age on you and a real grasp of how things really are, like when your drawing unemployment benefits and collecting social security. I suggest you refuse these things or you'll just be a hypocrite.
Theft: taking of another person's property without that person's permission or consent with the intent to deprive the rightful owner of it.
Just because some cronies in Washington say its morale and just does not make it morale and just.

You know, I really hate to personally insult people on here, however, you can go fuck yourself. Just because I am young does not mean you are right. Just because I am young does not mean I am not smart or knowledgeable. Please, if you're going to debate me, keep your petty and idiotic thoughts to yourself. I am 17, my mind is strong, learns quick and grasps concepts easily. You're 50, you walk into rooms and forget why you came in, your memory is failing, your body is becoming weak and you're at risk for mini-strokes. If anything my age gives me a mental advantage over you.
like when your drawing unemployment benefits and collecting social security. I suggest you refuse these things or you'll just be a hypocrite.
You put a gun to my head and say "pay for these chips or I shoot" am I hypocrite if I eat one of the chips? Of course not, I was the one who payed for them in the first place. Taxation is theft and it is immoral, if I am forced into paying for a service I am not a hypocrite for using a service that I've been forced to pay for.
Your parents consented for you paying taxes when they got your social security card, and you consented by going to school, a taxpayer funded operation. One has to pay for that in which they receive, unless you plan on being on welfare your entire life.
