A nation is considered great by..................

Which of these makes a nation great.

How rich the rich are

Side Score: 37
VS.

How rich the poor are

Side Score: 36

A nation is considered great by its great people. Great artists, scientists, industrialists, merchants, philosophers and inventors define a nation's greatness. Stealing from those who are great and giving to those who lazy and stupid does not make a country great.

The UAE has very rich rich people. Yet it is considered a developing nation as the poor are starving.

Because the UAE is a developing country, they really were not that right until very recently. This a picture of Dubai from, when? 1950? 1960? Try 1990. They have only recently become incredibly wealthy due to their oil resources.

Rich people in a society lacking coercion in the market place are neccessarly dependent on a strong consumer population, and are far more likely to invest in public services to aid the lower class.

How so? .

When individuals become wealthy through a free marketplace(necessarily devoid of government favoritism, loopholes, etc.) they do so through being a consistently preferable provider of services. In order to guarantee the continuing of personal prosperity, the healthy purchasing power of the consumer base is very important to the individual with wealth. They are more likely to take part in providing a safety net that isn't dependent on immoral means(theft and other forms of coercion).

The wealth of a nation is based free markets where capital is readily available to those with entrepreneur ideas.

Side: How rich the rich are
2 points

You probably mean nation loosely, as wealth from free markets neccessarly transcends any notion of borders or collective wealth.

Markets only destroy! I know that you're just a SAAAaavage beast, but I acknowledge that capitalism is a destructive system! All it does it allow the rich to steal from the poor! If we had democratic socialism and made it illegal to be greedy we could solve so many problems!

Cheers ;)

How can the rich steal from the poor? Capitalism is based voluntary exchange. Socialism is theft.

A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.

Side: How rich the poor are

People aren't links on a chain, they are individuals, they are separate and free, not bound together as one object.

But a nation is bound together as one object, that's why in this question they say a nation. The people of a nation need to be united together to be great.

Side: How rich the poor are

It couldn't be the other option. If the greatness of a nation depended on how rich the rich are then think of this scenario. The richest man in the world decides to make an army to take over, lets say, The Gambia. He takes it over and leaves the Gambians in poverty. He is now the richest leader in the world. Is that now the greatest nation in the world?

Side: How rich the poor are
1 point

A nation is rich only in terms of what it contributes to the world. If a nation contributes only greed, war, and misery then it is totally useful and is poor in terms of overall, meaningful contribution to the human experience.

To be rich is to be a contributor to general happiness, welfare of the world.

Side: How rich the poor are

The U.S. contributes McDonalds and Hollywood movies. It's what makes us great. People all over the world enjoy a nice burger with their movie. If it weren't for McDonalds and a movie, people woldn't date and get laid. The U.S. helping people get laid all around the world. ;)

By how it treats those who are down and out. Both Democrats and Republicans have bad policies.

I would say neither, the quality of life should be the standard in which the country's greatness is based off of.

Side: How rich the poor are

Greed doesn't make a nation great nor any individual. A nation can only be judged by what it gives, not what it takes.

The rich being rich doesn't make them greedy...
