About Arguing
I understand what you mean but the truth is people vary what they say and how they say it based on the topic, day, time, mood, whatever, and they may in fact fall within ALL of your categories depending on the situation you observe. But probably the simplest way to describe the behaviors on these debate websites is people are primarily here to either a) Chat b) Preach c) Joke I think the people disagreeing sensibly on issues are chatting, the people on warpaths are preaching, and the people acting childish are joking. But like my first comment up top we all do a little bit of all three. 1

I think the people who argue about the question are often overly focused on semantics. Meaning is important, but sometimes people miss the Forest for the trees. They may argue over what constitutes a forest rather than just taking my point. It then branches out endlessly as further semantic clarification is required and the initial point of the discussion is lost. The preachers have one point to make. They don't debate and they won't be preached at. You will listen to them and if you take issue, you are wrong. I occasionally wonder what they are like in person. Probably less interesting than the semantic types. 1
