Governmenst should prevent people from harming each other but every sane adult should have the right to harm themselves if they want to.

The war on drug created more problems than it solved. Alcoholics usually don't steal or work as prostitutes because their drug is cheap enough that begging will do. If currently illegal drugs were legal this kind of crime would disappear. Also owners of liquor stores don't fight violently about areas, so this category of crime would go too.

many of the drug-related health problems and deaths are not caused by the drug itself but by a varying degree of cleanness of teh drug or b unclean needles etc. So while there might be more drug addicts if it was legalized (though most of those who would be additional drug addicts are probably currently addicted to legal drugs - there are personalities prone to addiction) those drug addicts would be healthier than they are no.

And all recreational vehicles should be made illegal. Either that or institute a universal speed limit for SUVs of 25 miles per hour.

I say "Yes" because the drug cartels would be put out of business.

I agree with the legalization of some "recreational drugs", but some are so dangerous and/or addictive that I think that society has a legitimate interest in restricting them. I think that cocaine and heroine would fall into that category. I'm not sure exactly how we would determine which drugs to keep illegal, but I think that generally anything roughly as dangerous as alcohol, or less, should be permitted. Anything more dangerous probably should not. That still leaves a lot of ways for a person to get high.

Unfortunately most of teh drug-related crime problems have to do with heroin and cocaine, not with marijuana. Legalizing them will increase the number of addicts, but the cost of prohibition is higher than the cost of addiction.

There's no question at all in my mind that marijuana should be legal, as well as most of the other psychotropics, but I've gone back and forth on the question of legalizing hard drugs. I understand the "for" arguments, the cost of enforcement and the potential for tax revenue that could be dedicated to helping addicts kick the habit. It's a close call for me, and I could possibly be persuaded to go the other way.

I did have a friend who died as the result of a cocaine overdose. He was very young. He made a mistake and took too much and died very suddenly. I had another friend who drank himself to death. He is just as dead, but it took him a long time and a lot more effort to do it.
