We should let dogs play in the street. Goldfish lay on the floor. Let snakes wrap themselves around someone. Hogs, sheep and cattle roam the free range. Wait there isn't any unsettled land anymore. Maybe since New York has pet rats it can up grade to pigs running in the alley. Cages, where else are they to be kept.

I feel especially bad for fish kept in tanks, who in nature get a huge swimming space, snakes, who are often in tanks that are too small for them to even stretch out fully, and birds, who in nature are able to fly and have a huge roaming space.

There's nothing wrong with keeping animals in a specific space, it's just a matter of how big that space is and how well that emulates a natural life for that creature.

Animals deserve their freedom as much as you and I. Although some domesticated animals are fine to have as pets (if given proper roaming space), caging an animal is cruel. This is especially true of birds, who are made to fly, and of large sea creatures, kept in relatively small tanks compared to the gigantic oceans they would otherwise call home.

Just because we have the capacity to cage them and the perverted desire to do so does not make it ok.

And what exactly have they done to deserve their freedom?

As far as whether it is okay all depends on your emotional view. I personally enjoy owning fish and I might even get a bird one day. For whether or not they were meant to be free or not, man kind has done thousands of things we are not meant to do whether it be making nukes, driving cars, or being on the internet for that matter. So just because things are meant to be a certain way does not mean they are.

So should they be in cages? Naturally, no. However, seeing as we have given up on the natural way of doing things it really does not matter if the naturally are free.

What have we done to deserve ours? Is it because we have opposable thumbs that we are entitled to rule over animals?

I don't follow your argument on "giving up on the natural way of doing things". Just because people have followed a path that has taken us into a new world order (consisting of drivethru's, the internet, and globalization) does not necessitate that we have the right to drag other species down with us. We are autonomous beings and can make our own choices. The problem is that we can also make choices that interfere with the lives of other living beings, and we rarely make these choices in a way that is not self-centered. Most of us never take the time to consider what effects our choices are having on other people, let alone other creatures, and this is precisely why the world is going to hell in a handbasket.

Caging an animal is ignoring their right to a life that doesn't exist for human purposes.

My answer no because it is ridiculous. However, I think it's funny there's a small portion of us that are like "animals deserve their freedom and rights and shouldn't be treated under us!" and then there's the people saying animals are here for us to do whatever we want to them because we're stronger and more intelligent. We're also more stronger and intelligent than children. How seriously inhumane.

But really, I don't think they should be in cages at all. And I also think that people feel they should be in cages because some are dangerous and/or unpredictable and/or hard to completely control, and they should actually be put back in their natural habitats where they belong. In fact, I borderline think people having "pets" is inhumane too. :-)
