I do think it is a threat, and that threat has been realized. The death rate according to John Hopkins University is being reported as 3.4% as of 9:43pm EST March 3rd. (Source: https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/ 3% is not a trivial number. Think about it, that is 1 in 30 who get the disease mathematically would die. While I agree that as a western society we live in an overprotective realm. Minor issues trigger major reactions. I would argue this COVID-19 does not fall into that category or come even close. Now to your point about the appearance of panic in the response, some behaviour may appear to panic. However we cannot fall into a retrospective determinism. People who buy food, and wood, and plastic before a hurricane are good thinkers and planners. Unless the hurricane misses, then we call it panic buying. Yes the media does play into this. The internet is worse, as people are getting news in 140 characters. 3k dead, infections on 6 of 7 continents, amounting to over 100k infected, unknown transmission methods... yes I think it is a danger to society. The markets react because work cannot perform as usual, driving down demand, driving down productivity, driving down revenue. Side: Yes

Bronto is getting news from websites specifically set up to deliver fake news. Sites set up by the far American right to provide you with "alternative" facts, such as the alternative fact that the Nazis were left wing, Muslim socialists, or that Donald Trump isn't a fan of power and big government. Absolutely. Every single case and every single death is being reported so we're all hypervigilant about it. If the news reported every case of the flu, they'd need to run a channel 24/7 reading names out continuously. Sure, the medical community should be concerned about COVID-19. We should seek to reduce transmission, search for a vaccine, and optimize supportive care for affected patients. But as for the general public? Treat this as you would the flu- since most of you don't get vaccinated anyway. Wash your hands. Properly. And stay away from sick and febrile people like you normally would. Cover your cough and sneeze. And try zinc, it's good for viruses. Vitamin C doesn't do anything. Side: Yes
