Are Science and Religion Mutually Exclusive

Is there any reason to get so worked up?

Yes, they cannot be reconciled

No, they can coexist

From a generic scientific perspective I think its hard to reconcile religion because the existence of God cannot be proven using the scientific method.

However, from a sociological perspective (also a science) I think religion can be reconciled. Make sense?

They can coexist! Science has, more than once, proven that some of the stories of the Bible are based on actual events. While I believe that the Bible is a wonderful, and intriguing, story, many of the stories within its cover are based on truth. I believe that one can have one foot firmly planted in their belief, and the other firmly planted in science. One can always believe in the metaphysical as well as the physical. There are so many things in this world that are not explainable, so that is where our faith comes in. While someday they may be scientifically explained, in the mean time, we need something to explain these events. One can believe in a Higher Power and still believe in the 'Big Bang Theory'.

I believe they can co-exist in one's mind, however I also think that making them coexist is deluding yourself and manipulating the religion in to making it so. Science will cast great doubt on the major beliefs of the most prominent religions in the world, and so in this sense they cannot co-exist. However it is very easy to manipulate your own religious beliefs in to something so foreign that it perfectly can coexist with science in harmony, and thus, I vote no.

Basically what you're saying is that science and religion can only get along when you change one or the other. Did you mean to post this on the other side of the argument? I'm a bit confused by your intentions.

Normally I take a much more active role in debates, especially ones I create, but I'd like to step back and just moderate. Keep the debate going...assuming this one ever starts. If there's no arguments on the other side soon I may have to play devil's advocate.

Science and religion are not mutually exclusive and should be able to coexist peacefully. While many people believe that scientists try to "disprove" religion, they are actually delving further and further in to the wonders of the world and searching for answers to many of the questions that have been around for as long as man has been on the Earth.
