Are Tomatoes A Fruit?

I had known tomatoes were a fruit for quite sometime now. But then I had an interesting conversation with my step-father who thought that tomatoes were in fact, a vegetable. So what are they? "a wise person knows tomato is a fruit, but would not put them in with a fruit salad."
