Are independent (private) schools good or bad?

Some people argue that private schools provide a better education than state-run schools and discipline is often better. However, others argue that private schools are elitist and give an unfair advantage to those from wealthy, privileged backgrounds. Are independent schools, which can run with minimal state interference and select the pupils they want, a good or a bad thing?

When you move to America and live under our laws, I might actually debate this issue with you.

Private schools have always been great, they are great today, and they will always be great. It's called fredom of every parent to choose their children's education. It's called teaching our chldren the basics rather than Politcal correctness.

Liberals and Democrats want all our children funneled into Big Brother Government run public schools where they can condition our children's minds to political correctness.

When you move to America and live under our laws

Do you feel threatened by my existence? Are you aware that private schools aren't confined to the USA? Anyone would have thought I lived in a country that was wildly different from yours.

I might actually debate this issue with you.

If you're going to discriminate who you will and will not debate based on nationality, why are you commenting on my debate thread?

It's called fredom of every parent to choose their children's education.

Wealthy parents have that freedom. Poorer ones do not.

That's not the reason why people might oppose state schools (which by the way, were around long before political correctness was a thing). It's to try and give disadvantaged pupils (such as those who do not have such supportive parents) a bit of a boost.

In my country, there are alternatives to paying for education. You can send your child to a grammar school (if they're smart enough) or to a "free school". You can home educate if you have the resources, or do Internet school (these are only just taking off over here). And if you really want to, you can pretend to be religious and attend church so your child gets a place in the local faith school.

Parents have a lot more choice than just "state" and "independent".

You may as well tell me what your agenda is. Are you doing it out of xenophobia or because you think you're going to lose the debate?

Side: Bad thing

Until a private school abides by laws and maintains necessary standards, I don't think it's bad.

I don't agree with private schools. I think they're for the stuck up, snobby c who think they're too good to send their child to a public school, but that is their choice. As much as I hate them, I cannot dispute the fact that private schools do offer an advantage, however this advantage would not be so prevalent should public schools get the funding they need. If they did, and the governments of countries actually focused on giving a better education, then public schools could give an education equal or better than what public schools can provide.
