Are some People more Important than Others?

Add New Argument

Yes. Ask any Apple fan boy if he would have sacrificed some homeless dude to save Steve Jobs and he'll say, "Hell yeah!" ;)

Just tested this one out (I'll assume an Apple employee who is loyal to the company and zealously uses Apple products constitutes an "Apple fan boy") and you were wrong. I got a weird look and a "Personally? Probably not."

Yeah..., I have some news for you...., that wasn't a fan boy ;)

No, I don't believe so... All people have the same intrinsic value, it's what they choose to do with their lives that makes them more important to society, IMO.

So if someone chooses to do something that makes them more important than someone else, does that mean that they are important than another person?

1 point

Of course. Some people have a much wider field of influence than others. I'd think that makes them more important.

The Queen.

He said "important," not "prim and proper." If the whole royal family suddenly upped and vanished do you think that would have any substantial impact on the day-to-day British way of life?

Importance is a relative concept. To any individual, they are the most important person as all others merely comprise part of their experience. At a collective level, you could argue that those with the widest positive influence are more important I suppose. Unfortunately these people often end up having their lives cut short...

Important in what matter?

Important for society, of course. Some are more important in society than others. Some people will not be missed, and some will be.

I'm important because my boss is expecting me to be at work at 8 am tomorrow, and it's important that I show up, because he has a lot of important stuff for me to do.

I'm important in my mothers eyes, she thinks it's important that I have a good life, get a good education, that I am not ill and stuff like that.

Everyone is important in some ways.

Depends what you mean by "important". Ultimately, nothing any of us have done, do or will do will ever mean anything at all in the grand scheme of things. This should be kept in mind both when you fail miserably and when you feel your ego growing from any roaring successes.

However, on a smaller scale there are obviously differences in the proficiency of certain humans over other humans. Those who are stronger, more attractive and smarter tend to do better in life and thereby have greater influence on society. So, to that extent some people are undeniably more important.

No, no one individual is more important than another. But, try to get a table at one of the hottest restaraunts in NY or LA on a walk in basis...you better be "somebody" or you are not getting seated! So, in different situations some people are more important than others!

Most folks think celebrities and Sports figures are more important than others.
