I'd argue that they are, but much like the result on my "is art a waste of time" debate I'll probably be disputed and inevitably on the losing side.
I believe it's a waste of time because it's not needed to making our civilization grow.
For the health reason you can do other exercises.
For the reason of entertainment, which you really can't completely live without their are loads of other activities you could do ranging from eating, to playing video games, to chess.
Well they haven't civilized society but they come from civilized societies. People grow up wanting to be sports players and schools and colleges promote them. Sports is just one way we humans can share our strengths and weaknesses.
That doesn't constitute, logically, how it's not just a waste of time. By that logic wanting to be a super hero isn't a waste of time, when they don't even exist.
But we know that's impossible so why would that even have anything to do with this debate? Also I don't see a test of strength as a waste of time because anything can be called a waste of time especially in opinions. We have an entire sports industry that is global and it brings nations massive amounts of revenue. They clearly don't think its a waste of time. Video games are not a waste of time and that industry is huge. Most people say tennis is a waste of time because they see it as boring. For all the people that actually enjoy it we think its awesome. How can sports be a waste of time if they do much good?
But we know that's impossible so why would that even have anything to do with this debate?
It's an analogy. A kid wanting to be something that doesn't exist and can't affect the way anything works in our society, is virtually the same as a kid aspiring to be something he is less likely to be that also doesn't affect our society.
Also I don't see a test of strength as a waste of time
I don't see how it isn't. It doesn't add anything to our civilization.
anything can be called a waste of time especially in opinions.
True, I call anything a waste of time something that doesn't actively help, aid, or benefit society as a whole, and I consider neutral, things that don't help but don't hinder, to be a waste of said time.
We have an entire sports industry that is global and it brings nations massive amounts of revenue.
That is true, but just as it brings money in, so does other things that people don't have to spend money on. If a depression hits spending money on watching sports is one of the 1st things people will stop doing, defeating the benefit of sports and that industry.
They clearly don't think its a waste of time.
Well we have decided on differing opinions.
Video games are not a waste of time and that industry is huge.
I'd argue that they too are. They act as an outlet but other things that are more constructive can also. Like wood work, which while keeping the kid busy so he's not joining gangs also teaches him real world skills he can use constructively later on.
Most people say tennis is a waste of time because they see it as boring.
I don't let my bias of interest get in the way, or I try to keep it to a minimum. Although i do consider watching any sport to be boring(I'd much rather play) I always leave that out as an argument because I think about usefulness as the nation as a whole not just myself. Plus it'd leave too wide of a hole. I say it's boring to watch, someone disputes saying it's not. Then we just go back and forth all day long.
How can sports be a waste of time if they do much good?
What good they do that can't be replaced by something more constructive. The only benefit, off the top of my head, I give sports is that it helps people o lose weight, but even I can defeat that one by saying how doing simple exercise can do that also. it may be more boring but it's more to the point of losing wight.
The way your putting things won't work though. If all we teach our kids are skills for the future then aren't we control their fates? Also most jobs are being replaced by technology so what will you teach a child? Also their won't be jobs available for everybody. If a depression hits other countries continue their sports. Sports does many good things. Majorly it provides revenue for a given area which is very essential for civilization. Sports also is a way to test your body. Most people want to feel dominant so they take up sports. They can be fast and play track or be very strong and play football. Since sports have been around for ages they practically fit in society like a key hole. I do not know a place that doesn't play sports besides, probably, North Korea.
If all we teach our kids are skills for the future then aren't we control their fates?
We aren't teaching them the things we know exactly, we are just eliminating the things that don't give as much as they could.
Also most jobs are being replaced by technology so what will you teach a child?
I won't teach the child I'll let the child be taught like I was by doing and by the schools' system. And at the point where all human jobs are replaced by machines It'd then be a waste of time to learn anything. I'd still hold firm to that idea.
If a depression hits other countries continue their sports.
Yes, that may be true. I could give a more drastic example where it's the global economy, or I could keep it simple and say that when the economy of our country crashes and people are no longer spending money on entertainment, that the working of other economies won't be too much of a bother to ours.
Majorly it provides revenue for a given area which is very essential for civilization.
As with the above argument, when people don't have money at their leisure they're less likely to spend what they do have on sports.
Sports also is a way to test your body
That doesn't sound like a logical reason as to why sports are not just a waste of public time.
. Most people want to feel dominant so they take up sports.
People feeling dominant is also just a waste of public time that doesn't add a constructive purpose to anything. Or at least it doesn't add a constructive purpose to anything involving sports, which I have also found to be nonconstructive.
They can be fast and play track or be very strong and play football.
Also not logical additives to the public.
Since sports have been around for ages they practically fit in society like a key hole.
They fit into the society like crime does. Crime is inevitable, no matter how well off people are doing, and I don't think you'd say crime isn't a waste of time.
I do not know a place that doesn't play sports besides, probably, North Korea.
And they are still surviving. Albeit not well, but that's because their leader surpresses them not because they can't play sports.
This comes down to opinion. Testing your body is just recreation an element of natural selection. Its shows us how our adaptions can help us.Im sure when Americas economy was low in 2008 that sports were just cancelled. Of course not. People still spend their money to go see it. The probability of us falling into a major depression like that is low. Crime isn't always a waste of time either depending on the criteria of the crime. People with no money want something to do. Usually a basketball court is near and they play. Eliminating sports from society is just odd. We don't want to take that away from people because it doesn't advance us. Lots of things dont advance us as you say but they are a leisure additives.
ITS THE THING THAT THE WORLD IS KEEPING EVERYONE FROM GETTING FAT AND THAT THEY SHOULD DO THINGS AN AT LEAST TRY IF THEY DONT LIKE IT THEN DONT DO THEM BUT THINK ABOUT OTHER THINGS INSTEAD OF YOURSELF
SPORTS ARE LIKE REALLY FAST MOVEMENTS AND EVERYTHING THEY ARE AFUNN TRY THEM SOME TIME YOU MITE LIKE NOT SAYING TO DO IT BUT JUST TRY THEN YOU MITE SWITCH YOUR ANSWER YOU NEVER NO UNLESS YOU TRY
Indeed, it rather controversial issue, nevertheless I hold on the position that going in for sports just waste of time. Apparently, sports is essential part of our life and to keep human's body in good condition peoplle should be engaged in it. BUT! Actually, that's a problem! Because, as you know, nowadays some persons used to think that sports is a main part in their life and without it life wouldn't be so fruitful and etc. So, in fact, our modern world develops day out day, improving other kinds of technologies, equipments, affairs in almost all spheres of activities and because of this one I suppose the an education plays more relevant role than sports, I mean people should pay attention to it more closely in comparison with sports
Although I can understand why overs can enjoy it to me all it is running about aimlessly after a small object.
You can easily get better exercise without actually doing competitive sport and it also sport is more likely to result in an injury than simply going to the gym or for a run.
I don't mean only student or pupil, I talk about people at whole; surely, I cannot disagree with you, because sitting at home the whole day certainly harmful one, but instead of sports activity, you can change it by a lot of other affairs. Actually, sports-is a sphere, where people can be seriously damaged, getting significant injuries
aurad, That's a problem! Traumas and injuries are essential part of sport activities. Thus, I'm against it;) Alright, just could u imagine? If a sportsman get kind of trauma, who take care? I think nobody. That's a point, because the consequences of getting injury might be too terrifying, you must not be a genius to realize that person can become a disable because of trauma, we have too many examples, confirming this one. So, I suppose my position is proved in that case.
Sports is just for fun it is never a serious game infact it is just a game played for earning money. But according to me people those who waste their money in such types of games are stupids because they take these games very seriously.
Absolutely not. Sports provide many mental, emotional, physical and social benefits. More physically active people are more mentally and physically healthy. Daily physical activity has been proven to positively alter brain chemistry, and as a mental patient, I know the value of physical, and mental, activity.
Manual labor can provide mental, emotional, physical and social benefits and be productive. If people spent less time playing and more time working they would improve themselves and the world around them.
"Find a job you will enjoy and never again will you work"
-Confucious
Men who loves their job never considers themselves working.
And competition is another form of "sport" as it has its winners and losers. In fact, anything that can be challenged falls under the same category! Even the most ridiculous reasons
Sports spawned only because of high productivity, it wasn't magic. Sports is an unique part of life that offers many unique challenges to all levels of competitors.
no because sport is refresh of your mind when you feel bad in any thing especially in work and school when you go and get some sport than you will refresh mind and easy to solve any problem that was hard with you ,, And also it physical is also good and so that we need sport it is not waste of time ,,,,
I think, that sport is not waste of time, because its a part of life. People go in for sport to be health, some people are sportsmen and they see their future in this sphere
In my point of view pupil or student, i dont know who you mean, should combine studying and sport, because its hjarmful for person to sit at home the whole day and learn.
Hell no, sports are hardly a waste of time; they help develop coordination skills, competitive skills, manual labor skills (when getting paid to do them. I.E coaching, athletic directors, medical staff, ect), and overall provide the individual to provide themselves with courage, happiness, joy, pain, whilst working on a team (cooperation).
For those whom believe otherwise probably have never played sports in their lives, and/or are non-athletic. "Sports" is an art form; the creative aspects are obviously, in that all sports have a strategy involved, herego, the "artistic values" come into play, just as a painter is a strategist when figuring out what they want to do and how they want to do it.
Dear Smurfik, but we have examples of people who didn't go in for sport and because of it they're ill now. It's life, everything can happen and you want to say, that we should stay at home and afraid of injures which can happen with us?
Sports require lots of skill. They teach good values in life as well, like responsibility, respect, teamwork, and improvement. You are not just playing with a ball, running around with a stick, dancing around on a court, or simply rubbing ice.
I am not a professional athlete, but I am quite sure that going professional includes lots of guts, lots of hard work, and surely lots of wits. Choosing to pursue a very enjoyable sport and trying to become the best in that sport...that is essentially what it is like choosing any other profession.
NOT ON MY LIFE!!!!!! they are fun, interesting, good for you and they make you NOT FAT!!!!!!!! they make you muscly and attractive. they can also help you improve your teamwork and ability to help others out of choice. they can truly make you a greater person.
Physical exercise is good for mind, body and spirit. Furthermore, team sports are good for learning accountability, dedication, and leadership, among many other traits. Putting it all together by playing a sport is a winning combination.
Many athletes do better academically.
Playing a sport requires a lot of time and energy. Some may think this would distract student-athletes from schoolwork. However, the opposite is true. Sports require memorization, repetition and learning — skillsets that are directly relevant to classwork. Also, the determination and goal-setting skills sports require can be transferred to the classroom.
Sports teach teamwork and help achieve goals.
Fighting for a common goal with a host of other players, coaches, managers and community members teaches you how to build a collective team synergy and effectively communicate the best way to solve problems en route to a victory. This will be very helpful in life when encountering problems at work, at home, or in any arena.
Sports offer many health benefits, some less obvious.
Clearly, sports will improve your fitness and weight goals. However, they also encourage healthy decisions such as not smoking or drinking and offer hidden health benefits such as a lower chance of getting osteoporosis or breast cancer later in life. Also, a team counting on you to show up and work hard is plenty of motivation for you to get to the gym day in and day out.
Sports boost self-esteem.
Watching your hard work pay off and achieving your dreams brings about tons of self-confidence. If you can achieve something in a sport or with a fitness goal, then you know you can achieve any other goal you set. This is a very rewarding and exciting process.
Playing a sport cuts down on pressure and stress.
Exercising is a natural way to loosen up and let go of stress. Also, you will most likely make many new friends on the team who can be there for you as a support system. When you find you are having a lot of stress, you can call up teammates and head to the gym to talk it out and play it out.
For all of these reasons, it is always a great decision to get involved in the sports arena.

No way, sports help us get stronger, faster, braver, and smarter all just by playing sports a few hours a day. If you spend like 24 hours a day at sports the waste of time kind of makes sense, but about 6-8 hours a day doesn't seem too bad.
If you knew how to actually play the sport, maybe it will be less of a waste of time? Basketball isn’t just people stealing and throwing a ball. Football isn’t just grown men fighting for a ball. Baseball isn’t just men hitting balls and throwing them. Soccer isn’t the only sport where they have to be “quick and skilled.”
People can spend their lives doing far more productive things than playing sports; however, sports do have their benefits such as improvement on physicality.
