Are you a Debater?

Out of curiosity, how many people do debate outside of this site? In other words, are any of you high school/college debaters or at least used to be? Additionally I would like to know everybody's view on how debate is carried out on CD, and whether or not it should be improved.
Add New Argument

I have been involved in high school speech, which isn't quite debate, but is very interconnected.

Dammit PED! You're too liberal to wear the eye patch. Sorry buddy.

And.... I used to think you were cool.

Hey, only in it for the trophies. Always for the trophies. And other bling. And material possessions. See? Not a liberal sentiment. xD

May I ask which categories? Purely out of curiosity.

Sure! I did a lot. Informative Speaking, Original Oratory, Impromptu Speaking, and then a bunch of the more acting-oriented events. Those three I listed were my main ones, though.

I am on two other online debate forums: Debate.org (which we call DDO), as well as theology.online.com

I pretty much kick some serious ass on both of them.

Can you guess what side I take on the Theology forum?

LOL.

I must say I am a bit disappointed with this site. Oh, it's fairly enjoyable but I would like to see more debates, as well as more challenges. I do about 5-6 formal debates a week on DDO, but in about five weeks here I have not been challenged once, and have only once had one of my several challenges accepted. And then THAT was a lame one by Saint Nowhere, who made one post and then high-tailed it back to bible school, or where he hangs out.

LOL.

You're kinda an arrogant asshole, right? Is that your shtick? We got plenty of those already... just sayin'.

Arrogant for a reason, numb nuts.

Like Mohammed Ali used to say, "If you can back it up, it aint' braggin'--it's telling it like it is."

LOL.

If you actually "kick ass" on the other forums I suspect that speaks to the overall caliber of those forums rather than to your own. You have a tendency towards emotional appeal over reason and logic which rather undermines your actual credibility.

There are good debates to be had on this forum. If you have not been thoroughly engaged in debates by some of the more competent members, perhaps it is because no one sees you as particularly worth the time and energy investment.

Of course, maybe I am wrong and you are as brilliant and exceptional as your vanity proclaims you to extol. Usually, however, the need for such proclamations belies actual inadequacy.

Oh my, don't we talk pretty!

LOL.

It has been my experience that those who engage in verbosity and flowery speech in online forums are trying to impress. Either that or compensate for their true lack of knowledge on the given subject they are commenting on. And so I think you have just confirmed that theory of mine.

You have zero idea as to my education and past experience in debate and rhetoric, as well as written peer-reviews articles I have authored or co-authored since undergrad school. So I will take you observation of my skills and my intentions for what they are worth.

But thanks for the news on the debates here on CD. I am going to by looking for some a little more proactively from now on.

Ooops! I forgot to add your signature "LOL".

Offline I usually only debate to conversate and so I don't speak much because of this which due to the fact that people hold on too their beliefs to strongly and thusly hate it when they're questioned

1 point

Puntuation please, I'm out of breath just reading that. Are you related to Srom?

1 point

Sorry I missed that portion of school but who is srom and how do you even pronounce that

Used to be a debater on Debate.org, since all I see was gaming gaming gaming and useless questions that will never get too famous for the amounts of useless questions they supply, so that's why I moved here! Also in real life, I am the best person to lose to on debates since I keep tossing them facts and jokes to their face. Like the vanilla and chocolate post I made a couple minutes ago before this post. And yet here I am here, being part of teenagers and a few fake-age people and a only adult as a debate website. Welcome to CreateDebate...

Hmmm? Not sure what to think about you since you hit me over the head with a sock full of pennies the minute you joined the site? DDO sucks balls btw, just sayin'.

What didn't you like about DDO? I found it to be pretty rigorous, and I think their debate system and the way the winner is decided is superior to this one. I also think the best debaters in the Internet, generally speaking, are DDO habitues.

Just sayin'.

Actually, I only hit you with a sock full of pennies but now it's pillows since that was the mistake I did back then. And yes, DDO does suck. It would repeat some debates too many times and the character limits and only yes or no questions on their debates. (p.s; sorry what I did back then.)

1 point

Oh yeah..I forgot about that. All those "mafia" players. There are a lot of games on DDO.

But as far as nuts and bolts debates, when you find the right crowd, I still think they have some of the better internet debaters around.

1 point

Yeah, you might remember me. I am the guy with the Atheist avatar. (The dinosaur eating the Christian fish!)

LOL

I did four years of LD in high-school, with training camp in the summer. Some formal logic training in college. Some coaching and judging background as well. I debate more informally now, largely because formal opportunities are harder to come by at present.

You indeed seem to be one of the better debaters here.

I look forward to someday engaging in a civil and spirited debate with you.

Thank you. Our footing got off rather badly, but I do suspect we will have a productive and interesting debate at some juncture.
