Like the difference between "president" and "the President," one generally means "the God" when using the term--often to position one self against the preconception that it might be one of many. It is not intentionally insulting to refer to "God" however it is by default exclusive. For those who believe in many gods, it might be insulting, however they are mostly accepting of a singular head-god so it's tolerable to their worldview(s). Yet, those who believe in NO gods may find it rude and presumptuous in our time to use the term. What they fail to understand, is that those who really, truly believe in a singular deity are required to refer to that deity as God, for to do otherwise would be blasphemous. The agnosts and atheists must be sensitive to the perspective of the believers. Believers honestly feel it is WRONG to refer to the singular deity with an uncapitalized title in much the same way as it is insulting to write "president Bush." He's not just _any_ president, he's the President--so one must capitalize it as "President Bush" regardless of whether the writer is one of his supporters or even living in the US. Side: Proper nouns include titles

Believers honestly feel it is WRONG to refer to the singular deity with an uncapitalized title in much the same way as it is insulting to write "president Bush." In order to be "sensitive to the perspective of the believers" would surely require no preference for no, one or many gods; otherwise you're acknowledging a preference of one belief over another? Imagine the example of ex-president Bush, if the title had been in dispute (which it was), in order to remain unbiased (and to avoid insult) in whether he was the president out of the thousands that also claimed to share the title - and for those who believed no-one was entitled to it - using "President Bush" shows bias, and is both wrong and insulting. i write God with a capital letter and i don't believe in a deity or w/e. i do believe in God as a concept. it can be very broad, and people can infer to it as anything. me, myself, refer to it as the missing piece to the puzzle of the universe. and, really, even to theists, that is what it is. they use God to explain things that they can not. now, some atheists get offended (agnostics don't, since they don't care in the first place) mainly because they have nothing better to do. seriously, it doesn't affect us non theists in anyway, if anything, it affects us less than it should for theists. and there are now atheists who see the universe itself as god... because, like i said before, it's the missing piece of the universal puzzle. it's the imaginary number in math (i). There's no 'e' at the end of Claus. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clause unless you are referring to the movie, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111070/ in which case you forgot the word 'The.' Either way, the 'S' and the 'C' need to be capitalized. But I think that you intended to compare God to Santa and conclude that God is an imaginary figure. In that case I want to be there at the pearly gates when Saint Peter says, "Ah, yes..., you're the kid that compared God to Santa..." I just want to see the look on your face and hear you gulp ;) If God has a sense of humor and lets me in, I'll put in a good word for you ;) Side: No, that's silly!

I wasn't referring to the movie I'm just a bad speller (but you probably already guessed that). If there really is a god, then clearly he doesn't want us to know about him (or her or it)... there's just no evidence. I appreciate the offer though. As far as comparing god to Santa Claus, this guy showed me why I was wrong about that ;).... 5 Biggest Lies About Christianity
