Asap Debate: As a teen, did or do you understand Shakespeare?

I am doing an essay on whether or not Shakespeare should or shouldn't  be taught in High School and am wondering how many people actually understand or did understand his writing.

If you understood please give reasons on how you understond it and if you enjoyed it.

If you didn't or don't understand it then please list reasons why you don't and if you enjoyed it.

Thank you! :)

It's challenging, not impossible. We can't keep dumbing down the curriculum so the slow kid's parents don't get pissed off. And there are plenty of books with copious sidenotes explaining anything you wouldn't know offhand. WS had hands-down the greatest influence of any individual on modern English.

Personally, i didn't understand a lot of stuff because my comprehension was pretty low for my age growing up. But, still, I was one of the better English students in my classes. Either way, I think the average and above students definitely can grasp Shakespeare well though. I'd save it for 11th or 12th grade studies though.

I also think poetry falls under classical writings such as Shakespeare... because I could hardly ever understand what the heck poems meant and why they had to be written so complicated.

I rather enjoyed my Shakespeare readings. The name is so well known that my spell check just made me capitalize the name. (when you influence the language that much, you're important) Comprehension of his, or her (the debate continues), writings is easily done by something called "hard work". Plus you should know the roots of the English language. Old English and it's progression actually help comprehension of new words and rhetoric. I also loved Chaucer. If you think Shakespeare was hard try that guy out.

I love and always have loved Shakespeare. My first contact was "Romeo and Juliet" in ninth grade; I was thirteen. And I loved it. The prose, the double meanings, the iambic pentameter, the limited stage direction. It was all unbelievable. I moved onto "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in tenth grade, which I loved even more, and in eleventh grade, I performed "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare [Abridged]." Despite the satirical nature of the play, I adored the passages taken from Shakespeare's work and continue to know many of the monologues by heart.

I've gone on to "Macbeth," "Hamlet," and so many other works. I love Shakespeare. Bottom line.

I Believe that Shakespeare shouldn't be taught in high school. I Don't understand it and do not enjoy it. i don't believe that Shakespeare ever intended on his plays being read like a book.
