I, and no black person I know of is from an African country, speaks an African language or dialect, or really even know of our African heritage further than maybe the movie roots, and a few aced tests in History class. Thus with our detachment from the continent, it'd literally be wrong to call ourselves African-American. Or rather it'd be just as correct as calling your average, born and raised, all American white trash country bumpkin an English/European-American. Now I don't know about you, but I like to think of ol' Cleetus as white, and that's just about it. Aint nobody got time to be ultra politically correct. Side: Blacks

I use 'black' for the most part. This is because most black americans are NOT African Americans, but rather Americans of African descent. As that is quite a mouthful, I stick to black. This is mainly to distinguish them from actual African Americans (several of whom I work with)- meaning individuals born in Africa who immigrated to the United States. Side: Blacks

Using euphemistic terms like that means you are controlled by a fear of racism. In other words, going lengths to avoid stepping on peoples toes are exactly the kind of thing that keeps racism alive. Think about it. If you try attempt avoid saying black, then it sends the message that we ought to be offended by it. Through avoidance, you are keeping it real. Side: Blacks

I usually switch over to Ebonics and say something like, "Hey my brotha..." or "Yo homie" If I'm speaking to one or "Dat brotha/homie ove' there..." If I'm speaking to someone else or "The Brothers/homies..." If I'm referring to a group. I once got a plate of spaghetti thrown at my head for saying crap like that but the brotha/homie missed so I still haven't learned my lesson ;) Side: Blacks

I use both. People don't call me Irish American or European American. Why do I have to call them African American. And what about a real African that is white from Africa? Wouldn't he be considered African American if he moved here and gained citizenship? Political correctness is bull$#!& Side: Blacks
