That's about right. This is the fate of most debate websites, however. Eventually all the serious topics have been discussed seriously ad nauseum, and enough trolls or jokers have settled in, until you have short topics and posts which are simple or spiteful or humurous. And subgroups or site owners may take steps to try to save them, but I have yet to see that succeed. Side: Yes

On the one hand, it amuses me how low some of these trolls are prepared to stoop. But, on the other, site owners often have little time to spare investigating such attacks and can occasionally be fooled by an apparently sincere liar. Side: Yes

In fact Grenache, let me show you how deep the rabbit hole can go:- The Double Identity of an "Anti-Semitic" Commenter Smearing a Progressive Website to Support Israel Like many other news websites, Common Dreams has been plagued by inflammatory anti-Semitic comments following its stories. But on Common Dreams these posts have been so frequent and intense they have driven away donors from a nonprofit dependent on reader generosity. A Common Dreams investigation has discovered that more than a thousand of these damaging comments over the past two years were written with a deceptive purpose by a Jewish Harvard graduate in his thirties who was irritated by the website's discussion of issues involving Israel. His intricate campaign, which he has admitted to Common Dreams, included posting comments by a screen name, "JewishProgressive," whose purpose was to draw attention to and denounce the anti-Semitic comments that he had written under many other screen names. The deception was many-layered. At one point he had one of his characters charge that the anti-Semitic comments and the criticism of the anti-Semitic comments must be written by "internet trolls who have been known to impersonate anti-Semites in order to then double-back and accuse others of supporting anti-Semitism"--exactly what he was doing. (Trolls are posters who foment discord.) The impersonation, this character wrote, must be part of an "elaborate Hasbara setup," referring to an Israeli international public-relations campaign. When Common Dreams finally confronted the man behind the deceptive posting, he denied that he himself was involved with Hasbara. His posting on Common Dreams illustrates the susceptibility of website comment threads to massive manipulation. As another illustration, he even audaciously tricked the white-supremacist Vanguard News Network, posing as "DeShawn S. Yep. I can totally believe it. Hey, it's the web. It's the wild wild west all over again. We don't really know who we're talking to or what they're up to. And there are definitely players, trolls, crooks, etc, trying to use the anonymity of the web to cause havoc or to get what they want out of it. Side: Yes

@Slavedevice Quite seriously, the member Nomenclature/Quatumhead/ect.'s 'foul play' has been running people off of this site for months. I have talked to former CD members on other sites, such as Debateisland.com that have left citing this reason. He needs to be 'put in check', though I really do not know how Side: Yes

Do u like debate island? I like any type of forum (debate or just discussions). I try hard to not make personal attacks even though my arguments can be very controversial or heated. I tried debate island and I had problems navigating and using the site. >>thanks for helping me - I’m new to this internet stuff. I do not even tweet or Facebook Side: Yes
What Grenache and xmath have said is spot on. Quantumhead and all his other little nasty gremlins who are on a crusade to rant, troll, bluster and insult has, either willfully or unwittingly just confirmed himself as the sort of archetypal villain to whom they refer. I have no particular axe to grind with anyone nor do I have a permanent affiliation with any particular political party, yet with-all , once I express an opinion Quantum is sure to be latching on trying to interpret what was said as a slight on life's downtrodden losers. Whilst most of the major issues have been discussed many times, every day sees new worldwide developments which offer topics well worthy of reasoned discussion. Maybe I have been infected with the hostility which exists on this site and overreact at times, but HATRED and BITTERNESS are the dominant features of CD. Those few members who are afflicted with this failure induced emotional instability make reasoned discussion and argument, ABSOLUTELY and TOTALLY IMPOSSIBLE. My interpretation of the shocking levels of aggression is that a few members such as Quantum and all the wee quantums have never got past the first rung on the ladder to success in the real world so they come on here to slag everyone off. Expunging the site of the Quantumhead type characters would be impossible, so the choice is, leave or stay and endure the shallow minded little irritant. Side: Yes
