Democracy is the only condition in which Marxism can work, and Marx himself wrote about this. Marx specifically professed of the dangers that a coup would simply bring about a new form of dictatorship, and Lenin ignored him. There is a good book about the true path to Marxism written by a man called Paulo Freire, entitled Pedagogy Of The Oppressed. In summary, the main theme is that the goals of Marxism may only be attained through a process of education. Most people are politically ignorant and it is not their fault, but rather the fault of the guardians of the present system who intentionally distort and manipulate information in favour of their own ideology. Freire -- much like Marx himself once did -- argues that socialism can only achieve success when the population has become enlightened enough to reject the myths of capitalism.
