Can cell phones be used as a productive classroom tool?

While most teachers and schools are quick to ban cell phone use for their students and many view them as nothing but a distraction, can cell phones ever be intergrated into a classroom setting and used productivly?

At the college level especially, laptop are an essential classroom tool for most students. With proper use of cellphones, they too could be easily integrated into the classroom setting as well.

To a certain extent, many people usually answer text or get carried away to social networks. I for one think they could be use because it provides a portable device that allows us to access information at hand and very quickly.

So you don't think that cellphones will eventually, with the growth in use of laptops and tablets, also be integrated into the classrooms.

even many cellphones now have all the same capabilities of some tablets.

for someone who perhaps didn't like the size of a tablet, would rather have the portability of a cellphone that can do mostly the same things. just as an example.
