Can sex sell anything?

Of course!

I think it can certainly sell anything from cars to carpeting and perfume to deodorant and most everything in-between. Anything that is perceived to be sexy can be sold with an element of sex or sexiness thrown into the mix.

I think I can actually give credence to this belief because I worked at abercrombie kids over the summer. A few times over the summer break, though, the adult store borrowed me to work upstairs and I must say that people are lured into the store by the half naked pictures on the walls. Even in the dressing room, there are pictures of the different jeans in men's and women's and each model is wearing just the jeans (sometimes a belt) and nothing else, and the picture is cut off just above the belly button to show the jeans and some sexy skin. I'm fairly certain many shoppers were like me and almost felt an impulse to buy based on that.

Sex is used to sell anything and everything, from cars to clothes to children's toys (those dolls look like baby prostitutes!). Sex is everywhere, and embedded into everything we do. Everyone wants to be pretty, and seeing pretty people selling things is alluring- even if you recognize what it is. It's effective.

I think the industry (marketing) has proven time and time again that sex does in fact sell. Whether this is a good or bad thing is a whole other argument. The marketing industry spends billions of dollars trying to find out what works and what doesn't work to sell their products, and one thing they keep coming back to time and time again....is sex. The results of this we see everyday. Everything from food, to hygiene, to automobiles, to cloths uses sexual undertones.

Does anybody remember the commercials about the shampoo that supposedly makes women moan in the shower? Or the deodorant that makes women go crazy? Both of these products have done very well in sales.

It's undeniable I think.

I got into an argument with this college chic who said that when she sees a commercial on TV, she has to buy what they're advertising. I was like, did you really pass the entrance exam to get into this college?

Years later I realized that I can be sold but not by sex but technology. If you hype the specs, I'm gaga ;)

And you won't buy technology from a hot chick? Of course other things can sell than sex, but sex can sell an awful lot of things...

Side: Of course!

No, I'm a nerd! It's the specs that turn me on! I mean, get me excited enough to buy something. A hot chick doesn't get me excited to buy anything; she just makes me excited ;)

Side: Not Really

True, but the only reason I watch women's golf is for the women even though the majority are probably lesbian.

Not necessarily. It depends on how the person selling the sex looks too, and if they aren't selling their own sex, how the person who is supplying the sex looks. (;

Side: Not Really

Certainly not. It can't sell adult diapers, or toys, or tampons.

If the argument were "can sex sell adult diapers" you would be correct, but this is an argument about OVERALL profitability. Certainly there are certain things sex cannot sell, but for most things it has shown to be effective.

But the question clearly asks "can sex sell anything"?

So no. As you agreed.
