Career choice troubles, please help

so I'm trying to figure out what I want to persue in college. I know what I wanna do, but I also kinda know what I have to do. I know I want to study Astronomy/Astrophysics and get a career in that field. That's what I love, it's my passion. But the job market for that kind of work is so small its crazy.

on the other hand I'm kind of interested in psychology/criminology and my parents want me to persue that because the job market is good for it and so is the pay. But I don't know if I really want to do it. It's interesting but what if I find I don't want to be a psychologist? I'm a junior in Highschool atm so I have alot of time before I need to choose and this may change alot before then but I want some input. do I go with my passion and risk it? Or play it safe and risk it not being enjoyable?

my number one priority is I have to enjoy my work. Period. I cannot settle for doing a job that I don't like for my whole life.

please give me advice on what I should do. Or suggest alternative jobs that might solve my problem. As in they relate to astronomy but are more easy to achieve.

Thank you!

Never thought I would say it, but joecavalry raises some good points for consideration. On the other hand, however, it is easy to get stuck in the job you settle for and never go after your dreams. If that's the route you go you're going to have to go at it with great intentionality to make sure you don't lose sight of your dream. Age unfortunately brings a certain cynicism and that voice telling you to play it safe will probably only get stronger - it'll be, "you've got a good job why throw it away"?

I would recommend talking with people in both professions, visit on site and shadow if you can. Feel them both out more. Ultimately, you seriously have a lot of time to figure this out. Years. Allow yourself to breath, don't worry over it too much. I'm a college senior and I'm still making up my mind, as are most of the seniors I know actually. Adults pretend they know where they're going, but usually we're just as unsure as the next person (just better at faking it til we make it).

Dude I lovw astronomy and I am actually going to be an astronomical physicist so I would say do it. But the market for us isnt grand and your other choices are awesome too like criminal psychology. I would weigh my choices first and then decide.

Whether or not you will succeed at your dream is an important question, not only for survivability reasons, but if it is truly your dream or goal, if you don't do something with it, what was the point? At the same time, accomplishing that goal is up to you, is something you have control over, if the purpose of choosing this career is more ideal to you than I'd argue you should pursue it and try to do something with it, but don't if you don't think you will get anything out of it. Like Jace said try to get more familiar with both fields and try to figure out what feels more right to you. I am sort of in the same toss up, as I'm not too experienced with any specialization of any field or taken a deep personal interest. I have loved the idea of physics, of understanding reality, and I love to hear of theories and some concepts of quantum physics, I don't have much of an education in basic physics etc though it looks quite amazing. I took one physics class in high school, and it wasn't much of a good semester for me therefore I only learned a decent amount (of which my memory of has deteriorated a little bit of). Remember we still have plenty of time till we have to truly decide which route would be best for us, so you got plenty of time to figure it out.

do what you love who cares about the pay if you are doing whast you love then you want have to spend money to entertian yourself

Side: Astronomy passion

Money buys you options. If you follow the safe route, you might be able to safe enough money to pursue the passion route at a later point in time. If you follow your passion now, you may not be able to reach financial security.

Also think about this..., ever wonder how apparently successful people end up self destructing, like Lindsay Lohan? Maybe it's because they achieved their dream early in life and then had nothing else to keep them going. As long as you have a dream, you will strive for it.

But what the hell do I know. After all, I'm just a troll on some social site ;)

You have time to decide. Consider a double major for now - it should be fun if you're interested in both fields, and it will keep your options open.

If I had to choose one or the other, I'd pick psychology if it leads to more jobs. The fact that you're conflicted suggests that your passion isn't worth the cost, and there's nothing wrong with that. Your passion might change, or you might pursue it outside of your job.

I didn't know what I wanted to do until my late twenties. I switched majors 4 times before finally settling on one. Don't feel like once you pick a path you have to stick with it. You can always switch majors if you don't think the one you chose is right for you. I recommend taking classes from both of those subjects for your first year of college. That should help you decide which one suits you best. If you're really ambitious you can always do a double major and get degrees in both.

I agree with Joe that it's best to get financially stable first, then if you don't enjoy what your doing make a change.

I will use poetry to explain:

Don't be stupid, don't aim high,

Just be normal, then go die.
