I was in beauty pageants as a child and still do them occasionally. Not all beauty pageants are glitz pageants which is where you see the little girls with fake hair, teeth, and tan. All-natural pageants are very helpful on self esteem. I am 100 percent more confident in myself thanks to pageants. I will say that the participants in glitz pageants with pushy parents, or that are just plain brats, those aren't helpful. Little kids say what they think, and what they hear from adults, and they aren't always nice. That is detrimental to the children that are there to have fun. I think it all just depends on who you surround yourself with. There may be a glitz pageant organization that is really nice, (I've never seen it but it could happen) Side: Not all pageants are bad

pageants are a great way for young women to develop themselves for the future. many people look down on pageants, citing their beliefs that they are degrading to women and objectify women. but that notion is far from the truth. many young women who compete in pageants do so to win scholarship money or to be a role model for other young ladies.many pageant winners do alot of community work and conduct numerous speaking engagements throughout their reign. I don't mind kids being on stage but when they have make-up all over their face and they look like a 20 year old woman its creepy. They remind me of a toy doll. Look at the link. Notice the doll on the far right side and compare it to the other kids. Side: Bad
but really we are making kids overcome stage fright by putting them on a stage and saying look your best honey so you can win because of outer beauty... whatever happened to you know you should have confidence in yourself just because you are you and you are special and your inner beauty should give you a confidence! Instead what they're doing is painting a target on the back of the people on that list. It's only a matter of time before these lists start leading to the deaths of the people on them. Side: Bad

Being a parent, I don't agree with the glitz pageants at all. Children are the most natural, beautiful humans in the world. It disturbs when parents feel it's okay to ruin this with fake tan, tooth bleaching, mass amounts of make-up, fake eye lashes, revealing clothes. If this was an adult you'd probably call her a whore but because it's a child we're meant to think it's cute? It's creepy, it's like sexually exploiting your child. You have no idea what kind of pervert could be watching in the audience while they prance around in a bikini doing 'sexy dances'. I know not all pageants are like this which is why I specifically mentioned glitz pageants for the above statement. However even in non glitz pageants the judging is mainly based on beauty which I think is shallow in itself, especially to have a child be judged in attractiveness. You can argue it boosts self esteem, but if they lose what kind of message is 'sorry you weren't good/pretty/talented enough' going to portray to them? Certainly not a positive, ego boosting one.
