Could their be other forms of intellegence outside of Earth ie aliens?

Very possible.

Very likely. But I just don't think they've discovered Earth yet.

Of course there could be, but the problem is, we don't even know how likely it is. If you're familiar with the Drake equation, we could be one of a million detectable civilizations, or the only one. There are simply too many variables whose values we can only guess at. But sure, it's possible. Much more possible than, say, a loving God.

Supporting Evidence: The Drake Equation (en.wikipedia.org)

Hmm I had never heard of the Drake equation, I read the artical and it is very interesting.

I do like the drake equation, however I think the "ability to communicate" variable he used is far too high.

The chances of actual life in the universe though is high (I'd say almost certain), intelligent life less so but still high, intelligent life with the ability to communicate with us in a recognisable way and close enough for this communication to get to us any time soon is though, in my opinion, pretty low.

I believe that it could be a possibility that maybe there could even be another planet like Earth maybe a solar system close to being the same especially when space is supposedly infinite so couldn't there be infinite possibilities? I do not support all that BS about people seeing flying saucers, but I do think that it is likely that there are other forms of life in other galaxies, who knows rite?

Side: There could be
1 point

I do not see why not. Since space has no limits maybe there are different levels to space like maybe if you go into a dark hole ( assuming you survive ) maybe you would pop out into a different space, with different galaxies and all that good stuff like all those science fiction shows tell us about.

Side: There could be

There is no proof that there is or isn't, so we cannot conclude the answer to be, no intelligence of any form out side of earth. We can conclude the answer to be, there could be other forms of intelligence out side of Earth but we just haven't discovered anything yet.

Someone mentioned the drake equation already, here it is if anyone wants to play with it.

Average rate of star formation x fraction of those stars that have planets x average number of planets that can potentially support life x the number of planets which actually did develope life x the fraction of those planets that develope intelligent life x the fraction of those planets with intelligent life that develops means to signal their existance x the length of time that life is able to signal their existance =

the number of planets with intelligent life we could potentially communicate with.

So yeah, there's a whole lot of guessing in that equation.

But even using a low estimate of how many planetary systems (that's stars with at least one planet, in many cases they have more) are actually out there, apx.

10,000,000,000,000,000 (yeah, that's alot)

It's really kind of a willful ignorance to think that none of them accept us has intelligent life.

And that none have intelligent life right now, at the same time this planet happens to have intelligent life.

Even if one were to be so naive as to think we did not evolve, but were created, one would still have to admit that evolution does indead work (unless they're completely insane, in which case they probably already think they've seen a UFO anyway)

just by accident there would almost have to be "somone out there."

Side: almost has to be

steven hawking believes so therefore i believe so because we all know that guy isnt retarded........AHHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Thus, Stephen Hawking is infallible?

You claim that he believes in aliens; so what? His belief does not make it true.

Well if Hawking is this person's deity then isn't anything he believes in true to said follower of Mr. Hawking?

=P

Here is the problem with an argument against it: Until you have mapped the entire universe, then you cannot determine whether it is impossible for life to exist, but while one part remains unseen then we cannot be altogether certain. Also we need to accept that all humans have evolved from ancient bacteria. Even if the entire universe is devoid of life, some form of bacteria somewhere could be slowly evolving into something that will one day qualify as intelligent. And that is the least of the problems here: It is unfair to argue that the universe has limits until you have mapped it out and are omnipresent. There is very likely no edge to the universe, and it is growing as we speak. As new galaxies are spawned, each of them have a chance of creating intelligent life. Even if you say that it is done growing, we can only date our time according to our solar system. Say our system was created about 5.6x10^12 Billion years into the life of the universe; you must calculate that there is almost certainly something that came before us. If it was all created with a bang, then you can return to my first point.

Side: There could be

Well when you look at alien life you have to take to consideration that we have found old forms of bacteria like things on mars. Naturally if you have all the right components life will happen. UFO's I don't really know about but i know that meteors are the engineers of life. They brought earth to where it is now. There is a ton of debris left from the big bang so technically the chance of alien life is high. I think there is but thats just because im an astronomer. :)

Side: There could be

Absolutely. The vastness of the universe is incomprehensible to humans, to think that there is no intelligent life anywhere else is nothing short of idiotic, and extremely egotistical.

Side: There could be

hmm nope dont think so. All of those flying saucers are publicity stunts and area 51 is just a bunch of bull honkey cuz it doesnt exist.

Weakest argument I have heard in a long time. Well publicity stunts by who for starters? The government? Why would the government make themselves look stupid when they have their pilots freaking out when something is on the radar when it shouldn't be. Not that I am saying that the flying saucers are real but I believe something could be out in space other than human beings ( no not monkeys or any other domesticated animal ).

That is not the argument. That might all be faked stuff, I won't bother arguing that. The problem is that you are neither omniscient or omnipresent. The universe is vast, and there is a high chance that humans will die out before we find other intelligent life. You are debating parlor tricks, while we're talking about Hogwarts.

The question doesn't ask if they have been to Earth, only if they exist.

Area 51 IS a place though, it DOES exist, people work there. It probably doesn't have aliens, but it is a real place.

Side: There could be

I am skeptical. If aliens did exist, they would have introduced themselves to us by now.
