Even if today the Supreme Court that strike down the federal law about marriage being one man and one women. Regardless if the Supreme Court says that isn't marriage I am still going to be calling it marriage because that is my definition of marriage and its between a man and a women and it will always be like that for me and it will never change.

Side: Agree

That is what it been for years but the U.S has burned it buy accepting other things.

Marriage (also called matrimony or wedlock) is a social union or legal contract between people called spouses that establishes rights and obligations between the spouses, between the spouses and their children, and between the spouses and their in-laws.

No reason we have to specify man and woman.

That is the legal definition the Government gave.

Not the word the English Language defines it as.

So? I think the government is wrong. They have changed their mind about slavery, changed their mind about women voting, changed their mind about segregation, ...

I don't think the word should be defined that way.

"What is in name. That by which we call a rose, by any other, would smell just as sweet" -Shakespeare.

I think everyone has gotten to hung up on trying to define marriage legally. I think it was a mistake for the government to start issuing "marriage" licenses in he first place. Instead we should give "civil Union" license to both straight and gay couples. Beyond that let them decide whether or not that means they are "married".

Side: Disagree

Outside of being an enforceable contract, the government need not be involved. There should be no legal, external benefit to marriage. If there wasn't, this wouldn't be an issue today.

Language, by its very definition, is a fluid thing. The meaning of a word is essentially what is agreed upon by the consensus of society. Nobody, not the Oxford Dictionary, not an english professor, not 'The Queen' is an authority on the english language- it is a tool that is constantly modified by everyone who uses it.

Throughout history, words have changed in usage and meeting. Languages have converged and diverged. Pidgin languages have formed.

We already live in a society where gay marriage is a thing in most of the first world. As such, strict adherence to marriage being a union of a man and a woman has long since gone the way of the dodo. Anybody who argues otherwise is simply lacking in their understanding of what language really is, and is banking on social inertia that is obviously waning.

Not any more, obviously .

Marriage can be any union - e.g. 'a marriage of ideas'

There you go again. Same sex couples have the same rights as opposite sex couples.

You don't make sense. You need to change it to: Same sex couples should have the same rights as opposite sex couples.

Marriage (also called matrimony or wedlock) is a social union or legal contract between people called spouses that establishes rights and obligations between the spouses, between the spouses and their children, and between the spouses and their in-laws.[1] The definition of marriage varies according to different cultures, but it is principally an institution in which interpersonal relationships, usually intimate and sexual, are acknowledged.
