All democracy is is the idea of a government being controlled by the people; it' nothing more or, nothing less. Socialism a type of economic policy wherein a government controls most of the means of production; it's nothing more or, nothing less. There is no definite link between democracy and socialism (or any type of economic system). There can exist a democratic communist nation, a democratic capitalist system, and a democratic mercantile based system; the possibilities are only limited by the different types of economic system there are. There is no defined economic system that a democracy must hold... it can be whatever the people want.

In short, where ever a government gets it legitimacy is not inherently connected to what type of economic system it will enact.
