Designer Babies
What is a designer baby? | ||
Advanced reproductive technologies allow parents and doctors to screen embryos for genetic disorders and select healthy embryos.
Advanced reproductive techniques involve using InVitro Fertilisation or IVF to fertilise eggs with sperm in 'test-tubes' outside the mother's body in a laboratory. These techniques allow doctors and parents to reduce the chance that a child will be born with a genetic disorder. At the moment it is only legally possible to carry out two types of advanced reproductive technologies on humans. The first involves choosing the type of sperm that will fertilise an egg: this is used to determine the sex and the genes of the baby. The second technique screens embryos for a genetic disease: only selected embryos are implanted back into the mother's womb. This is called Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD). Recently scientists have made rapid advances in our knowledge of the human genome and in our ability to modify and change genes. In the future we may be able to "cure" geneticy diseases in embryos by replacing faulty sections of DNA with healthy DNA. This is called germ line therapy and is carried out on an egg, sperm or a tiny fertilised embryo. Such therapy has successfully been done on animal embryos but at present it is illegal to do this in humans. However, it is legal to modify the faulty genes in the cells of a grown child or an adult to cure diseases like cystic fibrosis - this is called body cell gene therapy. |

The possibility of the eradication of hundreds of genetic diseases, which otherwise we would have to eradicate one-by-one, is something we as a society cannot overlook. Yes, there are risks, but there are inherent risks to any new medical process which has been created. At one point, everything is unknown and dangerous. But that reason doesn't mean would should fail to investigate the potential of designer babies. Side: For Designer Babies

The "religion" argument is simply wrong. You have the right to subscribe to whatever religion you want, but that does not mean you can enforce it on others. You have the choice to use the technology or not, but you can't prevent others from using it b/c it doesn't follow your religion. Side: For Designer Babies

Designer babies would allow for horrible diseases to be put to an end. Scientists would are now able to screen for illnesses such as cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia and muscular dystrophy. With more research they would be able to end these illnesses, and more, which cause so many horrors and hardships to people now. Designer babies would allow for a healthier society and a healthier future. Side: For Designer Babies

Designer babies are a progressive measure in our society. Screening embryos to stop the passing on of genes that carry certain diseases and disorders is an advanced ability that our society should desire. Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and invitro fertilization (IVF) will help decrease the rates of inherited medical conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, and obesity. PGD and IVF also allow parents to view if their offspring will have a disorder like down syndrome and spinal muscular dystrophy. Permitting the use of these technologies will create a more healthy society. In addition designer babies are beneficial to ailing family members. They can be genetically modified to become the perfect donors for people that have fatal medical conditions. For example Charlie Whitaker, a boy with Diamond-Blackfan Anemia had slim chances of survival until his parents chose to create a designer baby brother and use stem cells from his umbilical cord to ensure Charlie's survival. In this way designer babies can save lives. Side: For Designer Babies

Eliminate genetic disease and give it straight teeth and a healthy body and mind. I don't think it makes any difference as long as it's from my genetic material. I don't want some aryan master race baby, but if I can use only the best genetic material available for the baby, then sure. I don't consider it unethical. It hurts no one and only helps the baby, and it helps the world. I wouldn't tell my kid though, unless he or she asked. Side: For Designer Babies

Babies will be created to help save other people with blood donations, etc. For example, Adam Nash, the first known designer baby, was created to help save his sisters life. It isn't right for babies to be created for the sole purpose of saving another. Side: Against Designer Babies
In my opinion, creating designer babies is not ethically or morally right. The traits and qualities of a genetically altered baby are predetermined by their parents, this may not be what the child would want. This process reduces the child’s ability to choose their interests. For example, a deaf couple from the US, Sharon Duchesneau and Candy McCullough, used the technology to create a deaf baby. This baby could have been able to hear, but due to the genetic alterations requested by the baby's parents, was not given the ability. Side: Against Designer Babies
There are too many problems associated with designer babies, one being that many people believe that parents of designer babies are “playing God”. By altering a baby’s personality, looks, and characteristics, all individuality in the world will be gone. Side: Against Designer Babies

The creation of "designer babies" is a slippery slope. It will start as a way to eliminate genetic disease, a good thing. However, people WILL use it for cosmetic, racial "purity" or homophobic reasons. It could create an underclass of those who are not genetically modified. Side: Against Designer Babies
designer babies not only will allow mankind to lose the essence of who we are, imperfect, but also will make way for more moral issues to erupt. for example, when engineering a designer baby, the genetic make up of the babies can be changed. who's to say one day we won't be bringing these designer babies and carrying them around like fashion accessories!?! if we can change the genetic make up, altering the alleles that affect the way people look, the same way we can decide if we want a nike shoe or an adidas, than are we not reducing the way we each look, individually, to that of mere products? it's true that this form of genetic modification can reduce risk of birth defects, but in nature, in natural selection itself, survival of the fittest has always and should always be in place. designer babies will also cause a population boom worldwide. so no, i stand firmly against designer babies. It lowers the standard of our population and will cause other both ethical and physical issues in our world. Side: Against Designer Babies
Babies will be created to satisfy the accepted stereotypes of what is said to be desired. As we can see now, majority of people try to go along with stereotypes and what is considered to be "normal". It is "normal" to want to fit in. People will create babies that "fit in" with what is accepted. Side: Against Designer Babies
