Did Christopher Columbus discover America and should he be credited with it?

I'm pretty sure the title is self explanatory. I do believe that Christopher Columbus discovered America, he may not have been the first but he did discover it. The effect of Columbus discovering it was much greater than any other person because it made other explorers want to sail to it. I do think he should be credited with it too. What do you guys think???

I don't think he should have credit because the Indians were probably the first ones to discover the land

But is there any proof of such a discovery or is this merely speculation... there is a great deal of proof pointing to the fact that Columbus found the "new world" first whereas... what do we have saying that the native Americans found their homeland first? uh.. to my recollection, none.

You pretty much summed it up for me :). Columbus was the first person (known) to discover the Americas... and sense this is the case, he is every bit deserving to be accredited accordingly.

Your wrong. An icelandic viking came to america in the year 1000 (plus or minus a few years) wheras Columus wasn't born until 1451

Leifur the lucky (son of EirĂkur the red) , an icelandic viking, came to america and lived there for about a year. some 400 years after Leifur died christopher columbus was born. So Columbus was not the first man to discover america

Columbus never set foot on nor ever saw what is presently called North America. He landed in what is now called the Bahamas. It was a Viking who made the first known voyage to North America. Leif Erikson came long before Columbus and lived in Newfoundland for 10 years.

No Columbus should not be credited with discovering America.

Side: No

Christopher Columbus and his henchmen wiped out the Indian population in Haiti. His Holiday should be removed.

Columbus should at least get credit for connecting America to the old world. The others who came before did not make a lasting impression on the whole world.

No because the native Americans came way before Christopher Columbus. In addition people found evidence that Vikings came before Christopher Columbus it's just the secrets of Vikings stay sealed.

I say Christopher Columbus doesn't deserve credit because the natives were there first, the Vikings also came and lived there for about 200 years also prince Madoc went in 1170 and hoi-Shen came in 499 and Columbus came in 1492 so he shouldn't get credit.

People disagree about who discovered America because they found evidence that Chinese and Japanese had brought their culture to Mexico and Peru since artifacts were found.Others, say Vikings from Europe 500 years ago discovered it first since their remains were found in Canada. In my opinion, the most credit should be given to Prince Madoc from Whales who came out of Alabama in year of 1170. Since Native Indians spoke similar language.

None but the first humans had discovered any of these lands, for in the beginning, all lands were one continent (so some believe).

Yeah every country were all one land one time and if some one discovered a bit of one land he discovered everything

Side: No

Yes. None but the first member of humankind has discovered a continent according to the theory that all continents were connected. I think that puts an abrupt end to the argument.

Christopher columbus really did found America because when he was looking for india, mistakenly found America. But thank to columbus, everyone now knows America but then know one knew about it.

He did not discover America because it wasn't called America when he discovered it. :)

Yep, he did. Yet, maybe not credited with it. Because it was like a random guess! Like guessing on a test and getting it right.

And he was looking for India!! Not America.

But, he was the one who got the idea of America which is now like the best state to live in. So, I think he should get half credited.

The conquer of the land and the "Indian" Wars are unrelated. He did not DISCOVER it.

Stay on the educational topic that encourages you to learn!

Also, there was no "idea" of America. America was accidently found on the search for India. Also, I don't think Columbus found gold and riches for the king the second conquest, and they did away with his head, the end.
