Did the Soviet Union give the US a reason to be great?

During the Cold War, the US had the largest, most prosperous middle class. The funded our space program and reached for the stars. The US had a well-funded public education system that was the best in the world. The US made leaps and bounds in science. Wages in the US were higher, and prices were lower (after adjusting for inflation). The US had a much better wealth distrubution, and Americans felt as though they were part of a nation.

Do you think it was because the USSR and its Soviet System (which was called "communism" in name only) gave the US and the powerful in the west (including the business community) something to compete with so the western system looked better?

Thoughts please?

Yes, it did. Sadly, the US is now giving Russian politicians a reason to be despicable.

I believe it did. Of course, this is not absolute, and in some ways, the Cold War lead to more inequality and injustice, particularly for women, but in terms of technological advancements, space exploration, funding public programs like education and the war on poverty (to make the US look better and more just), the Cold War, and the post WW2 America was a watershed moment in our history where the US made the free market system work for everyone and not just a tiny number of robber barons because we had a moral reason to. We had a common enemy that promised nuclear annihilation, so we had to work together and make the country great.

I think so. The Cold War made America feel like a better country on the whole.
