Discs vs cartridges. Which is better in gaming

Cartridges

While cartridges cost more to make, I believe they are better. A cartridge can't break as easily as a disc can, and they (at least in the 90's) had very few problems with load times when compared to rivaling systems. A cartridge also varies per system, creating a new design mold per console, allowing the games to be easily differentiated. You can tell a Genesis game from behind easier than trying to tell a PS1 game from behind. They also prevented the need for multiple discs for one game. Overall, for their durability, efficiency and general overall appearance, I believe cartridges are better in gaming.

Side: Cartridges

both have their advantages and disadvantages so let me list all the advantages:

Cartridges:are alot less fragile, lasts longer, has superior loading times, and can easily work after damaging it.

Discs:can run up to 700 mg,are cheap to produce, and can hold more memory.

Now I shall list the disadvantages of both:

Cartridges:can only have up to 12-16 mg,cant hold as much memory as a disc can, they are expensive to produce, and they take longer to produce

discs:have very slow loading times, can easily break, don't last as long, and most likely cant work after damaging it.

Personally it was a tough choice to decide which ones better but I'm gonna have to go with cartridges due to how less fragile it is to discs and has superior loading times. I cant tell you how many times I went through discs because it had only a couple scratches. Not to mention I'm sick and tired of looking at a loading screen and waiting. I just wanna get straight to the action.

Wheras disks are more fragile it isnt hard to just take care of your disk. Take it out gently, clean it gently, and put it away. They hold far more memory which in general makes them far more superior to cartriges especially today when games are so massive they sometimes even require multiple discs. Cartriges just wouldnt work. As for the loading times they really arent that bad, maybe 10 seconds at the most so it really isnt a big deal either. And it also comes down to your console or PC and how good the processor and disc reader is. Lets also not forget discs are far cheaper and faster to produce. If we used cartriges still it would take far longer to produce a stock of a game and have it shipped out making release dates farther away. Discs are just more practical. Unless you can make a cartrige that can hold as much memory as a disk and is just as cheap and efficient, it will be discs.

Not all game discs have fast loading times some (depending on how much memory the disk has) it can take minutes just to finally play the game.

Side: Cartridges

While the performance and storage potential of cartridge cannot be discounted and will exceed those of optical discs (assuming equivalent tech for both), I'm going to have to go in favor of discs.

Reason is its affect on the industry. Cartridges are individually expensive to produce, and as such many game manufacturers lost a lot of money on cartridges that were expected to sell and never did. Discs, on the other hand, cost pennies, can be bought blank en masse, and don't require particularly complicated assembly. Burn, label, done.

Before the ubiquity of downloads, discs offered the cheapest (and therefore, least risky) way of producing games, allowing for more funding to go towards the development itself and freedom to experiment and innovate in ways that typically resulted in terrible failure in the cartridge world. Remember the NES ET cartridges?

I expect downloads to fully supplant discs before too long, but I expect the world of gaming would, today, be far less diverse and far more expensive if we were still using cartridges.
