Children from divorced homes have more psychological problems, that children from which one of the parents has died.. According to suicide statistics about children and divorce children of divorce are almost twice as likely to attempt suicide than children from normal homes. So, children whose parents broke up of family relations has psychological trauma as a grief. Children display their grief by

demonstrating anger,

sense of guilt,

frequent breaking of rules

drug and alcohol abuse

Thoughts of suicide or violence

Divorce can result in not only distancing child from the parents, but also from friends and peers at school. Most of the time, the school grades suffer due to the inability of the child in concentrating on his studies at home. Studies have shown that children from a broken home, are more likely to drop out before graduating high school and are less likely to attend college.

The real harm is done by society. People are given unrealistic expectations by the institution of marriage. They are blinded to what is important.

Divorce, like society, can damage a person or child's psychology just like alcohol damages the liver.

It certainly can. For all the reasons OP mentioned, as well as because there simply isn't as much time in the day for the single parent to supervise and raise their child.
