Do/did you take a foreign language in high school? Which one?

And how much did you like it? Do you regret taking it?  I want to know how many people actually take various languages.

I currently take Spanish. I started in middle school and worked my way up to Spanish IV by Sophomore year. I'm trying to get into AP Spanish by Junior year.

That way I can jump into German II/French II my Senior year.

I like the language. It is definitely one of the most useful languages you can learn, and you can do a lot with it. I would recommend it to anyone.

I took Spanish because I already knew it and it was an easy A ;)

Yes I did and it was French. Talk about the differences between yesterday and today...languages were not even available until High School and it was slim pickings then! I believe the choices were French, Spanish, Russian and Latin. Language was a must if one wanted to go to college but I don't really remember if it was if you didn't. It was, perhaps, simply an elective.

The only reason I regret taking it is because I never had the opportunity to use it. I do speak German and wish they would have taught it back then because German grammar is a toughie and I would have had the opportunity to learn more about the language and its intricacies.

I've always wanted to learn German. I guess it's just so I can relate to my ancestors. But I have no time for that right now. Maybe in a few years, I'll try it.

Yeah, I went and learned German. It's a lot of work though, if you're prepared for that. Something about how it's closer to Greek than Latin, and adheres to a case system.

But if you do, get the clear cellophane from a pack of cigarettes. Put two fingers in it, and hold it taut by spreading them in a "peace sign." Hold in front of your mouth, and yell in German. Congratulations, you sound like Hitler! Guess you shouldn't have tried this at the mall!

I dunno I found German grammar a lot easier than French. Then again I didn't really want to take French in the first place and I essentially had to learn German since I was living in Germany at the time.

Side: German

I really enjoyed French class in school. French is a great language to learn. It's spoken in so many places, and once you know English and French, Spanish is a cinch.

Side: German

I hope it works the opposite way! ;)

I'm planning on taking French eventually. That would be cool, you know? Last name French, speak French... I can see it now.

I am currently in Spanish II as a sophomore and Frenchie, DAM! I speak spanish near fluently and make an easy A but to be in spanish IV as a softie you gotta be a genius or fluent!

Spanish is a simple language with many cognates and it is much easier to spell than French, the French teacher at my school is horrible! She is the ONLY French teacher and has been for more than 25 years. So unless she steps down I will not be taking French.

I took a year of French because my guidance counselor in ninth grade decided I needed too...despite the fact that there were plenty of seats open in German which I had asked for. Needless to say I didn't get much out of it, I wasn't happy to be there, we were moving to Germany the following year and it made more sense to learn German. In the end I took three years of German and found it fairly easy to learn. German was much more like English and I suppose that having a real need to practice it made it easier to learn the language.

When I was in High School, I took two years of French. When I went to college, I also took two years of French.

I was hassled for taking Spanish but I never got into it. I know it (shitty though) but I still don't like it.

My parents (and old spanish assholes) would tell me that Spanish is important for getting ahead in life. What these irrational, stupid people didn't realize is that i had the ability to think in extremely logical terms and produce many theories in my head in under 5 minutes. Although i didn't focus too much on math classes, my brain thought in mainly mathematical terms. I spent most of my life calculating possibilities and different ways to do things. Different ways to solve the same problem. When philosophy and science came into my life I started thinking of the logic behind these theories and how they intertwine. How things can be explained and how things worked. I would develop theories in my head and later learn that someone already came up with that (which is why i admire Plato so much, we're so alike, but different in our approach). I am constantly working out things in my head and it is a very useful tool for forensic psychology (what i want to get a PhD in).

So tell me, why should i give a fuck about learning Spanish?

I didn't say you should care about it. I just wanted to know what languages, if any, were taken by various members of the site. That's all...
