Do videogames cause kids to be violent?

Funny thing is, lot's of 'school shooters' didn't like violent video games - like the Columbine shooters - instead, they had a morbid fascination with guns. They prefer the real stuff!

Why should violent video games cause violence? I've played a few violent video games, and I've only punched a person once in my life, and that was an accident.

You must have caused lethal pain with that blow. I have actually punched someone by accident also. He simply lauged until he fell onto the floor unconscious.

I def believe it does if they play violent games, my brother has played them all his life since being able to play them. i used to as a child and grew out of it. He is now violent towards animals and i am affraid of it gettin worse and moving onto ppl. he plays them all day everyday. he is now 20 yrs old and still lives at home, no job, doing tafe at home. he's killed two of his own cats. i have called ppl to arrange help for him because i believe its a big problem considering the boy i used to know was so loving and caring and shy....and now this!!! after playing lots of video games day in and out.... cmon!

I'm no psychologist, but I've had enough training in psychology to know that killing cats is not the result of playing video games. There is definitely some larger issue at work. I've worked with many foster children, and killing cats is a red flag. These people simply cannot function in society. Many of these individuals were crack babies, neglected or severely abused as children.

Yes, videogames cause kids violence. It act as a slow but effective poison, i.e. it affects slowlly. Even I am a gaming fan i have been playing such games since last 10 yrs. Sometimes i think like shooting someone and i have those images that i am shooting someone. It makes child in thinking in a violent way. but if proper care is taken this will affect a kid's mentallity.

There have been studies which show that children exposed to violent imagery will play measurably harder with each other afterwards, however I doubt that this is what the question was really asking. I assume it was asking if violent videogames cause children to wish to act it out in real life, and the overwhelming majority of children who play violent videogames but are not violent criminals would serve as proof that the answer is no.

Side: No

If videogames didn't exist, would there be violence? Was there violence before videogames? The answer to both is "worse violence without videogames". Violence causes violence, violent videogames provide an outlet for frustration, the retards that imitate what they see in games are already ticking time bombs imitating anything they perceive.

The first video game was patented on January 25th, 1947. Two years after the largest, most devastating war in history. When video games went commercial in 1971, all of the societal problems attributed to them (i.e drugs, violence, racism, apathy etc) were already present. It is important to note that video games only became a powerful media force in the mid 90s, with the invention of the Nintendo 64. This implies that no product of the game's industry (i.e, a child raised using video games regularly) has ever started a war.

The primary reason children become violent is poverty and neglect. As this is supposed to be fought by governments and parents, who regularly blames video games for violence, it is evident that violence in our societies is in fact caused by people who do not play video games.

This sounds like the forever raging nature vs nurture arguement. Fact is, like some people on here already stated, is that those who are influenced by such things, already possess such a personality, and anything will fuel their violence.

Lazy parenting, poverty, lack of/poor education, poor/bad diet, the list could go on. Just study everything that most rich people and their offspring have and try to spread it across society in some way and things will be fine. Easier said than done, i know, but that is one of many solutions which will never be implemented, for reasons that those who know; know!

We believe that violent video games cause violent behavior because people can make their own choices and they make it seem that being violent is okay.

Side: No

If parents explain to their kids that the violence they see on those video games should never be emulated in real life, then the kids will not be violent.
