So a deistic approach? You would think that if an omnipotent set in place these divine laws, his will would be to maintain them himself, not allow them to be ignored and cause mindless suffering of billions all for his superlative vanity and arrogance? This is not a God that should be setting any laws or rights in the universe. Also this argument just falls apart when debating against atheists, it's kind of preaching to the converted. Side: Government.

"Also this argument just falls apart when debating against atheists, it's kind of preaching to the converted." Then if the debate's topic mentions God, whom atheists don't believe in, what are you doing here? Debating on side of government right? Well am not talking to you. The one who asked the question is a theist(converted). "allow them to be ignored and cause mindless suffering of billions all for his superlative vanity and arrogance? " There are many scenarios in the bible which makes it clear, God usually allows us do what we want untill in a critical situation, he interferes. Example is in jeremiah; God had to call for an emergency meeting in heaven for inteference sake, also when men tried to having a building high up into the sky, he came down to interfere. God allows us take a lot of decisions by ourselves, but he has also interfered many times too, without our knowledge. So God does maintain, he just doesn't ask for our permission. Side: God.

People. People gave the government the right to give us our rights. Why? Because that is the only way a "right" can work, because "rights" are man made. We wanted rights to exist because we wanted a common understanding that certain things were forbidden within society so that we could live comfortably knowing it would take a tremendous amount of balls for someone to try and murder us, because there are established, man designated punishments for messing with other's rights. A social contract if you will. Except with intimidating people with intimidating guns enforcing them. Side: Government.
Sitar: WE, the people ... in order to form a more perfect union. And, I might ad, to prevent U.S. from becoming a theocracy like Iran. Europe went through that in the middle ages when those who "spoke for God" ran the politics of England, France, Spain, Italy, etc. Those who TOOK money from the people as they thought they were entitled to ... "for the church"! The "Church" was not the solution, it was the PROBLEM! Don't like our government ... find your own country (theocracy). Hopefully, we can take our government back! Side: God.

1) Excuse me but which "God" would that be? There are many differing beliefs about it. And if you live in a country with constitutional freedom of religion you can't infer that one specific God granted that country it's right to exist and allowed it to worship anything the people want to worship. 2) The lessons again and again from history is that theocracies become abusive and oppressive due to their absolute power inferred by their God's mandate. 3) One could argue God gave NO ONE any right at all. God reserves judgment for himself, and the scriptures of Christ are full of him telling people they're wrong for thinking they're right. How can you be getting rights from God when you essentially have none? 4) Civilization is known to go much further back than the nation states we know now. If God is behind the right to govern then why didn't he steer the existence of governments back when we were babes in the wilderness? It seems mighty convenient that now that people have built a vast variety of governments all over the world that somehow God gets to take credit and hold authority over them all. Side: Government.
